Someone from Nettwerk (I think) said at one point that apparently she had been working on a new album but it was farther behind schedule than previously expected when she first signed on (and I had been really looking forward to possibly seeing her), and her label wouldn't give her support for touring, since she didn't have a new album to plug. That said, I have no idea about the aforementioned new album, if it's finished, if it will ever be finished, etc.! pax, Sarah <><><><>Sarah Andrews<><><><><><><><><><><><>sra5@psu.edu<><><><> /\ "I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process /\ \/ anything as a career. She's still around. She took some time off from major recording endeavors to spend time with her family and, as I'm sure you will recall, she also was bitten by a tick in her own backyard several years back and suffered pretty badly from Lyme Disease. > Has she released anything new since "Homebrew"? Neneh's third album, _Man_, hasn't been released yet and there is no news from her label as to when the release date will be. Personally, I really didn't like _Homebrew_. I'm hoping _Man_ will be more impressive. Also... Neneh has put out several singles over the years since the days of _Raw Like Sushi_. One of them, "7 Seconds," features Youssou N'Dour, the Senegalese vocalist who has worked with Peter Gabriel (most memorably, on "In Your Eyes"). > Back when they were first talking about Lilith Fair, she was listed > among the artists that would be performing in it, but I never saw > anything about her playing at one and haven't heard anything about her > since... During a radio interview with Sarah McLachlan that I heard a couple of months before Lilith Fair, she mentioned that Neneh would be unable to participate in Lilith Fair this year because she was busy with her own project. Maybe next year it'll work out. Guess it depends on when her album is released. While we're on the subject of female performers who have seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth.... Has anyone heard Alanna Myles' new song or, even better (or worse, depending on your tastes) her new video?? When I was a youth living back in Michigan, Alanna Myles released her one big hit, "Black Velvet" - y'know... the one about Elvis. It was a smash. I mean, the song is still being played on radio stations today, almost ten years later. Indeed, I even have her self-titled debut CD in my music collection. So, anyway... I really thought she was pretty cool and always wondered what happened to her. Well, I was watching MuchMusic yesterday and it seems Alanna has stepped back into the ring. It's not pretty, folks. I don't know if she has a whole new album out, but she has definitely released a new single. It's called "I'm Bad For You." I loved her voice in "Black Velvet". She growled that song out and turned right around to hit some pretty strong high notes. Sadly, it appears that the years haven't treated her or her voice well. I had missed the first thirty seconds or so of the video so I had to watch the whole thing just to make sure it was really her. I knew it sure did *look* like Alanna Myles, but based on her new choice in clothing and makeup and the abysmal voice that was coming out of her, I truly thought maybe some porn star (no offense to Traci Lords) or former model (no offense to Vanessa Williams) had decided to try her hand at singing. So, if you see the vid or hear the song, let me know what you think. Personally, I think that, unlike Neneh, Alanna might have saved us and herself from a lot of unnecessary pain if she would have just quietly faded into oblivion. Perhaps she could form a support group with Kim Carnes, Toni Basil, Samantha Foxx and Donna Lewis. :^) Peace. Paula is keeping me company via my CD player and listening to her got me thinking again. First, I was thinking about the video for "I Don't Want To Wait" and how it depicts Paula's character as having lived for many centuries, in different lands and, likely, knowing many people throughout history. First, I recalled all the geographical references she has used in her songs. Then, I looked at all of the historical, pop culture and literary references noted in her music. Turns out there are a lot of them, considering she's only released two albums. As far as locations in Paula's songs, there's Maine (from "Happy Home"), Boston (from "Ordinary"), New York City (from "Oh, John" and "Suwannee Jo"), the Milky Way and Saturn (from "Saturn Girl"), Chicago and Colorado (from "Oh, John"), Eden and Babylon (from "Garden of Eden"), Tennessee (from "Cowboys"), the Mississippi River (from "Mississippi") and the Amazon River (from "Feelin' Love"). And, with regard to personas in Paula's music, there's the Virgin Mary and Cleopatra (from "Ordinary"); Alexander the Great and Henry VIII (from "hush"); Adolph Hitler (from "HB"); John Wayne and the Marlboro Man (from "Cowboys"); Goya, El Greco, Vermeer, Velazquez, Rembrandt and Rousseau (from "Chiaroscuro"); David and Goliath (from "Throwing Stones"); Rapunzel (from "Mississippi"); Friedrich Nietzche (from "Nietzche's Eyes"); Jesus Christ (from "Road To Dead"); and Barry White, Isis and Desdemona (from "Feelin' Love"). Taking into account that wide-sweeping scope of locales and rather disparate social and cultural imagos, I would have to guess that Paula is a pretty smart cookie with a definite interest in history - both ancient and contemporary. Or, I'd have to say that she truly has lived other lives in the past and is simply recalling places she's been and people she's known. :^) Anyone have any input on this? Peace.
