I went to both Paula shows on Oct. 19th and 20th here in Seattle. They were the best shows of hers I've seen yet. The only difference between the shows was that she only did "Saturn Girl" on Sunday nights show. She sounded great and looked gorgeous. I definately think that if you're going to see her, this is the tour to see. She has a full band this time instead of her on the piano for the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, she still plays quite a bit on the piano, but there are several times when she's dancing around, spinning, jumping and doing wild arm movements. Kevin Barry is on guitar the whole time (he's played guitar on both albums). He made "Feelin' Love" sexier than it already is. When she sang "Jolene" the crowd went nuts!!! She does the best version of "Jolene" on this tour that I've heard her to do date. There's a full band and the music was powerful. She danced around, sang powerfully, grunted angrilly and beat boxed crazily. I could go on and on reviewing every song but that would make my hands cramp and make you all cross eyed. My friend Dan, whose loved her since the Harbinger days, went w/ me one of the nights and he was just floored. He's never seen her perform before. I asked if I may have built up his expectations and let him down and he said I didn't do her justice. After both shows I talked with Phil for awhile. He's such a great guy; very friendly and down to earth. I also met Jay the first night and talked to him for a few. When I ran into him the 2nd night, he totally remembered my name and talked with me again for a few. I have to say that he's a very talented and brilliant drummer. I guess to finally conclude this review, all I have to say is that you haven't seen her or questioned whether to see her again...I say...definately go to this show!!! You'll love it. That's it for now, - -Bri - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 00:18:24 -0700 From: Matt Presidente Subject: (harbinger) Paula In Vancouver! REVIEW! I just got back from my second ever paula cole concert, and I'm very tired but I must write about it while I still remember... It was tonight... Oct 22nd/97 here in vancouver at the vogue theatre... I went early to meet her but that didn't work out... the theatre is set up all weird and I didn't get to meet her :( Anyways, overall the show was amazing! 18 songs... 105 minutes, and best of all I SUCESSFULLY BOOTLEGED IT!!! But the sound quality is bad and the encores turned out wobbly... here was paula's setlist: Suwanee Jo Happy Home Throwing Stones Mississippi Feelin' Love Me Where have all the cowboys gone? Road to Dead Bethlehem Tiger I am so Ordinary Hush Hush Hush Watch the Woman's Hands Hitler's Brothers - -encore one- Carmen I don't want to wait Jolene - -encore two- La Vie en Rose (in french!) So let me go into some more detail... I had great seats... right up front and center, but the venue really sucks... bad acoustics, and the sound was really bad... the balance between the vocals and the instruments was terrible... and the piano sounded really awfull... but her performance made up for it! When I saw her at lilith fair this summer, she kind of just did one show at the end... but right now she is on a big tour, so she wasn't QUITE as energetic at first but she really picked up by the end... First of all, I have never heard SUWANEE JO, but I've heard of it, and I was so surprised to hear it as the opening! It was unreal! She came out in a long red dress and black top (which she later took off to reveal a sleevless black top to the red dress) and she was playing the CLARINET and stomping her feet. The song was very dark, and it reminded me a lot of Patti Smith... the whole style of it... very cool. She then went into a speech about how this next song was for her mother because they get along now and paula can swear in front of her! She then played HAPPY HOME... she sung it, along to the band... no piano. She then went to the piano, lifted her arm and said "armpit hair and all!!!" and went into THROWING STONES... it was not quite as energetic as at lilith, but it was good, and the audiance loved it! At the end she raised her leg and kicked the piano! (YES! She was wearing her black boots!) After that she went right into MISSISSIPPI which was powerfull as ever... I always love how she does that EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.... at the end of the second chorus... Next was FEELIN' LOVE which lasted over TEN minutes cause of a long AWESOME guitar solo in the middle and a bunch of improv stuff at the end... paula played piano to this one too... it was VERY good. Then ME... beautifull... Where have all the cowboys gone was cool cause she wore this little mask for the verses and made funny poses... it was really cute... ROAD TO DEAD was next, and it was one of the hilights! She played the finger cymbals, but she sang the verses with such anger, but the choruses were done more in a major key instead of a minor, and it was a very cool effect... One of my favorites was next... she told a story about wanting to be on the cheerleading team, but she hurt her foot and had to wear a weird wodden shoe... "It sucked!" She said, but when she finally made it on the team "it sucked too!" and then she played BETHLEHAM... Bethleham PART TWO was TIGER, and it was really good! Especially the end... the HI YA NOW's were really loud and at the end she just screamed them into the mic... She then went on to tell a story about how this next song was for the people who supported her durring HARBINGER, and went on to play I AM SO ORDINARY, solo piano and vocal, and it was just beautifull (other than the sound system made the piano sound so bad!) She really played it with a lot of passion. Hush Hush Hush was up next, and it was just drums and piano... it was very nice... especially the end cause they jammed a bit... it sounded good. WATCH THE WOMANS HANDS was really good as well, she clapped and Jay played drums on his thighs... kevin sang along a bit, and they sound great together... this was another hilight! HITLER'S BROTHERS was next, and was very good, except the tech guy for the drums was on stage trying to fix the drum set the whole time, and the song only lasted about 4 minutes, but at lilith they really dragged it out, for about 8, and it was more intense... this was good though... they did the whistling and bass drumming and everything. Lights go down paula leaves stage... standing ovation, paula comes back on and sings CARMEN - she played the guitar too... it was really nice... one of my favorites. Then it was I DON'T WANT TO WAIT... which I just couldn't help singing along because it was so well done tonight... she really put a lot into it, and I think it was one of the hilights of the evening... Finally she told the dolly parton story, and the audiance went wild and she did an angry wonderfull fun version of JOLENE... it was REALLY REALLY REALLY good... probably the best one of the night... the audiance stood and danced through this one and really cheered. And when we all thought she was done, the band came on and played a solo in the dark for about 5 minutes till finally paula came out in a big black dress, a black feathered shawl, black long gloves, and a cute blond wig! She looked so COOL! :) She sang a french song called LA VIE EN ROSE, which was really good... started off pretty, but at the end she did a lot of yelling (kind of like in Jolene) but it was a great way to close the show. the backdrop was a white screen with various dresses hung onto it, and for the last encore FIRE was projected onto it making it look like the dresses were burning! Very cool effect... Well, that was it... I had a good time, but I'm a bit sad that it's over. I had been looking forward to this show for a long time! Was anyone else there? Bye...
