If so, we could all meet and get a group photo :-) Yeah, sure, you're saying-how we all gonna meet up with all of those people? Well, my plan is to look for Paul Kim-I figure he'll be the most identifiable of us all-So, everyone look for an Asian boy (man) with purple hair wearing an FTeee being trailed by an older woman (also wearing her fteee) and her daughter etc. etc. etc. :-) If all else fails one of us could bring a large FTE sign-whadda ya think? Oh, and I'm bringing one of my trusty indelible markers in the hope that Sarah will sign my shirt. I can't wait for the energy of Paula and the serenity of Sarah. ( And I love the fact that it's freeeeeee) Hope to see y'all there Judy - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Oct 1997 13:58:40 -0400 From: "Kenn" Subject: (harbinger) Secret World The topic of Paula's contribution to Peter Gabriel's Secret World tour has been discussed here in the past, but, last night, I was watching the show with my roommate and thought that perhaps it should be mentioned (albeit briefly... OK.. my idea of brief, anyway) for the benefit of those subscribers who are new to the list. If you haven't seen the Secret World video, you simply must get a copy of it. Paula is featured quite frequently during the concert and has some really wonderful moments during the show. Watching the video again last night, I found myself smiling whenever the camera would move in on Paula as she sang and even more so when she danced. Paula dances in her own shows, but there's just something so lighthearted about the way she let herself go on the SW video. It's really great to see her having so much fun. And the smiles she flashes are just as beautiful. Check her out when she's singing backup on "Kiss That Frog" and "Sledgehammer." And, on the SW video, her voice, naturally, is as remarkable as it always is. Her solo during "Don't Give Up" and her contribution to the African chant at the end of "In Your Eyes" are definitely the vocal highlights for me. That's all, really. It's just that I hadn't watched the video for a while and seeing it again last night reminded me of how enchanted I was with her performance the first time I watched the tape. Oh... and to give Peter Gabriel his due.... the show itself is probably one of the best concert videos I've ever seen. In addition to being a superior showman, Peter is one of those rare artists who is capable of reproducing the same sound live that he does on his recordings. So, check out Secret World if you haven't already. Peace. I saw the vid this morning before coming into work. I'm really glad they chose to feature IDWTW because it clarifies what the video is about. First, I'll mention that the version of the vid that appear on PUV is the original version (not the poorly edited one that is usually being shown now). I still don't think it should have been edited. The original is just so much better. If you haven't ever seen the original, then some of the references I'm going to make probably won't mean anything to you. Anyway... according to the facts PUV's research team provides, the idea behind the video is that Paula's character is immortal, thus her ageless appearance throughout several centuries. The men in each era (Middle Ages, Elizabethan, French Revolution) who are depicted in the video are Paula's lovers. However, as shown in each era, the men grow old and die, while Paula maintains her youthful appearance. There are moments in the depiction of those early era when Paula's character seems happy, but mostly she appears to be sad or, at best, solemn. Her lovers' deaths are illustrated by the black veil that Paula places over each of their grizzly old heads. In the final sequence, (which never made it to the updated version of the vid, by the way) where Paula's character is shown as a flapper in the Roaring 20s, there is no lover. However, her character is happy anyway because she has finally come to terms with her immortality. So, she's dancing around doing the Charleston. For me, this definitely sheds more light on the inspiration for the video and how it could relate to the song. Hopefully, it will do the same for some of you. Peace. After seeing the video again, I noticed that, indeed, this was the case. However, I seem to recall that the original version of the video listed a different director's credit. In fact, I remember two names being listed. I also remember speaking with someone who had worked closely with the video shoot who mentioned that the video was directed by two very well-known video directors. I can't remember precisely who that person named, but that is my fuzzy recollection. Perhaps I can find out more at some point in the future. Whatever the case, I thought some of you might be interested in the following article. It explains the origin and use of the Alan Smithee moniker in movies and television. ************************************************************************************** Alan Smithee, Please Stand Up HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - With the release of ``An Alan Smithee Film -- Burn, Hollywood, Burn,'' the Directors Guild of America's all-purpose pseudonym for disowned films will make the unlikely move from cultish devotion to the realm of public knowledge. Recently, there was even an academic gathering devoted to the oeuvre of the fictitious director, the name put on more than 30 feature and TV films over the past three decades when the actual directors were too overcome with distress over the final results to live with their names appearing on them. The first two films to have used the nom de film were ''Fade-In,'' actually directed by Jud Taylor in 1968, and ''Death of a Gunfighter,'' begun by Robert Totten and finished by Don Siegel the following year. The most recent picture signed by Smithee, of course, is ``An Alan Smithee Film'' itself, as original director Arthur Hiller pulled his name off the Joe Eszterhas-penned comedy when his original cut was significantly altered. In between, there are 31 other pix in the Smithee canon, mostly films that scarcely surfaced at all and remain little-known today. Most notable are the longer TV versions of David Lynch's ``Dune,'' the TV picture ``Riviera'' originally helmed by John Frankenheimer, the recut of ``Backtrack'' disowned by Dennis Hopper, and the heavily cut airline version of Martin Brest's ``Scent of a Woman.'' However, the possibility has now arisen that there may have been a real Alan Smithee. A half-hour 1955 TV drama called ``The Indiscreet Mrs. Jarvis,'' starring Angela Lansbury and directed by one Alan Smithee, has surfaced in the library of Rhino Video. The item predates the DGA's invention of Alan Smithee by a good 13 years, but remains mysterious because there is no further evidence of such a director; the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, for starters, has no record of him. The writer of the show, Frank Burt, is deceased, and Angela Lansbury, contacted through her husband, Peter Shaw, has no specific recollection of the individual who directed her in the program. Nor did the makers of ``An Alan Smithee Film'' suspect that there may actually have been a man with that name. So, if he exists, will the real Alan Smithee please stand up?
