Hi, I'm new on this list. Just to say a few words about myself, my name is Julia Ellerston and I live in Iowa. Obviously, I like Paula Cole, otherwise I wouldn't have signed up for this list. But I also like a lot of the other artists who were on the Lilith fair tour this summer, and some other bands. Anyway, does anyone know if they will ever come out with a THIS FIRE piano book?? I'm guessing they won't come out with a HARBINGER one, since it didn't do too well when it was released. Or does anyone have an amazing "hear it, then play it" ability, that they could tell me how to play some of her songs?? Anyway, that's about it!! Well, meeting Paula was a cool experience, although not that touching since I didn't have time to tell her all the stuff I wanted to. ;) But Nietzsche's Eyes never fails to move me. I wish she could do that song live, although I understand why she doesn't. And many aspects of her performance on the SWL home video make me shiver. :) > mine is one day i was driving to pickup my girlfriend at work and i was > entering a tunnel and ME was playing. i had a bad day at work and the song > was coming up to the part "i am walking on the bridge..." and i just had to > cry. it just related so personally to what was happening in my life. Corey, I've had similar thoughts while listening to Me. It's a life-affirming song, but it's also very sad and bittersweet. I've really enjoyed reading all your Paula Moments! Mine's coming in just a minute, but first.... Who has seen McDonald's new tv ad campaign? It's a direct lift of Cowboys! It's a guy, relating to us his tremendous craving for plastic food, with the same spoken word over staccato drums she uses during the verses. Do I smell a lawsuit? Nah, must just be the grease. I first 'discovered' Paula in August of 94, at a Peter Gabriel concert in a small venue, in Bethlehem (yes Bethlehem), PA. A pre-Woodstock tuneup show. I was lucky enough to snag a front-row standing position at the general admission show....I've always been an avid Genesis/Gabriel fan, and thoroughly enjoyed the concert, but it was like no PG show I had ever seen before. Paula's stage presense and soaring vocals had me simply in awe.....between songs, I found myself asking those crammed around me if they knew her name. Before I even learned her name, I was delighted to hear Levin and Rhodes play the opening chords of "Don't Give Up." Previous attempts to do this song justice in concert had left me disappointed, for it is my favorite PG song, and I was thrilled that this new talent was being given the chance. She nailed the first chorus, drew cheers on the second (cause SOMEwhere there's a place where we belong....) Then came the bridge....wow. (when times get rough you can fall back on us...) Huge ovation! Gabriel sings the second half of the bridge, then the third verse. Finally, she stepped up to finish the song with the last extended chorus. Momentarily, Paula forgot the lyrics! She paused for a moment, turned to see the encouraging eyes of her bandmates, regained her composure and resumed in *amazing* fashion. I had tears in my eyes, as did many of the people around me......she gave new meaning to the song for me. Gabriel took a moment to point out what a perfectionist Paula is, and that it was the first time she'd ever "fucked up" since she'd been with them, and jokingly added that he fucks up at least once a night. I've spoken to Paula about that night, and she remembered feeling angry at herself yet very touched at the response of the crowd to her gutty recovery. Three years later, she's still my favorite singer, hands down. I've witnessed other mishaps, mostly technical, during her shows (like Kenn's story of the drum-trip)....she never throws a tantrum, always keeps her cool (I've seen her at least 4 times 'take it from the top'), and she's won my admiration for that-- not to mention her genuine appreciation for her fans and her humble acceptance of praise. She's something special, and we're lucky to be witnesses to her young career.
