She unfortunately didn't pass through Helsinki. :( I was lucky enough to see her three times in the states though! The first time I saw Paula live was at the Starlight Bowl in L.A. with Sarah and Suzanne Vega. About three months before, a friend sent me a live complilation album from a radio station in LA which had an acoustic guitar version of Ordinary. I was floored by her songwriting skills and voice. So I bought Harbinger. I was expecting to only like one or two songs on the album and was surprised that the whole album was great. I looked for info on the web and B Titus' web site told me she was playing in LA. Tickets hadn't been announced yet, so my friend in L.A. picked up third row off center tickets. Again, I was expecting a nice little singer-songwriter show from her. Wrong. She came out swinging and knocked me out. This was before THIS FIRE had come out, so hearing her sing songs like Tiger, Mississippi, and Throwing Stones without having heard them before were revelations. (She was REALLY right on that night, too.) I was also amazed at how the songs from Harbinger that I thought were perfect with the full band, backup vocals and production were often even better with just a piano, voice, and drums. It really proved that the power was in the songs and the voice, not the production. And when I heard Jolene for the first time with the grrrrs and grunts...wow. (I finally heard a version of Jolene in Finnish the other day. I laughed.) Anyway, she came out backstage during Suzanne Vega's set and I got to chat with her for a bit and gave her my demo tape. (I know. Tacky. Tacky. Tacky. I thought she wouldn't listen to it, but wanted to try to share back a little of myself like she had unwittingly shared with me since in that short time of getting Harbinger, her writing style affected mine. "Walking with the Spirits" was a song I wrote after being taken with "Ordinary" "Happy Home" and "Bethlehem"...the style of telling a story more than writing a pop song. My song got regional airplay before my band broke up and I moved back to Finland. Hopefully, if all goes well with my record company, you may hear that song in late 98... :) Enough shameless self promotion...back to Paula) I was in Salt Lake City at the time and caught her show there. I told the manager to just tell Paula that Steve from "Shoot the Mime" said "hi." She actually remembered my tape, and had my sister and I come back to take a couple of pictures with her and Jay. Both she and Jay were friendly, open, nice, etc etc. No attitudes. Just wonderful. I cannot say enough good about her and Jay! The last time I saw Paula was at Lilith Fair in Mountain View. I did not even try to say hi since I didn't want her to think I was stalking her or something. The show was amazing as always, but unfortunately too short. It reminds me of a story Harrison Ford told. (I will summarize) He was being interviewed in a restaurant and an older woman came up and said, "Hello. I wanted to say how much I enjoy your movies. I am very sorry to bother you, but I wanted you to know that you are a great actor." He talked with her for a few minutes, signed an autograph and she left. Later, the interviewer asked, "Doesn't that bother you?" Harrison Ford said, "That woman had a lot of courage." The interviewer didn't understand. Ford continued, "She had faith that the nice man from the movies was nice in real life. I have unfortunately found that is often not true. Yes, it is hard sometimes, but I feel it is my duty to be nice to my fans since technically, they are the ones who allow me to do this work that I love." At least to me, Paula and Jay (and I have seen the same from Phil on this list) aren't pulling any rock star attitudes. They seem to love doing what they do and take the time to let the fans show their appreciation. I know that her kindness as well as her music has really made me tell as many people as I can to buy her albums and go to her concerts. Sorry for the length of this. Unfortunately, it's easy for me to get excited about Paula topics. Thanks for your patience Steve Helsinki, Finland - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Oct 1997 13:35:12 -0400 From: "Kenn" Subject: (harbinger) Notches on my Paula belt... ;^) Michele wrote: > How were you fortunate enough to do 12 or 13 shows just this year > alone? Actually, I just looked through my photo album and did a little tallying. My estimation was off by a few.... I've seen Paula perform eleven times this year. Hopefully, it will be twelve or thirteen times *after* her fall tour. But, so far this year, I've seen Paula and the guys at: * Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY - 12/31/96 - (opened for Barenaked Ladies) * Toad's Place, New Haven, CT - 2/97 - (headliner) * Paradise Club, Boston, MA - 2/97 - (headliner) * Theatre of the Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA - 2/97 (headliner) * Sony Music Studios - 4/97 (?) (recording of Hard Rock Live - Paula did a full set - even though they only showed three songs when it finally aired on VH1 !?) * U.S.S. Intrepid, New York, NY - 5/31/97 (Z-Day concert - appeared with Duncan Sheik, Erasure and Bon Jovi) * Randall's Island, New York, NY - 6/15/97 (Guinness Fleadh music festival - Paula was a main stage act) * Sony Music Studios, New York, NY - 6/17/97 - (recording of Paula's West 54th Sessions appearance) * Pine Knob, Clarkston, MI - 7/18/97 - Lilith Fair * Pine Knob, Clarkston, MI - 7/19/97 - Lilith Fair * ABC Studios, New York, NY - 8/97 (?) - Live w/ Regis & Kathie Lee Looking forward to the Beacon Theatre shows.... It's not a duet; David Byrne has the floor and Paula is, I think, one of two backup female vocalists on the song. You can really hear her emoting toward the end of the song in her typical exuberant style! I've heard bits and pieces of the rest of "Feelings" and I like it, although I think "Miss America" is definitely the strongest song I've heard off of it. David Byrne's "Feelings" came out a few months ago. I previewed the disc at HMV a few days after its release and thought it was pretty good (for being a David Byrne CD... I'm not a fan of style, really). I'd have never even given it a preview had I not known Paula had contributed to one of the songs. "Miss America" is a pretty good song, but I must caution other avid Paula fans.... Paula's contribution to the song is not significant enough to qualify this song as a "duet". In fact, don't buy this CD if you expect to hear Paula sing! Her part in "Miss America" is only background vocals and you can seriously only barely make out her voice through all of the music. We're not talking about the kind of work she did on Secret World Live, OK? Personally, I ended up leaving "Feelings" at the store. Still waiting for Paula to do a duet with Eddie Vedder...... Peace. But now the gods of better concerts have delivered on to us in this area (Orlando) a House of Blues. Now in the past few weeks there have a several good shows. Anyway to get to the point, Paula will be here in November at HOB, now I try to stay informed about music and I thought I did a pretty good job of it, but Paula's opening act is in this area is Jen Tyrnin. Can someone out there fill me in on Jen? Is anyone on the list going to be at any of the Florida shows? FYI Tickets have been on sale for the HOB show in Orlando for a little over a week. Tampa show are also on sale now. Thanks P.S. By the way, the list is fun to read again, now that its about Paula again. The Paula moments are great.
