First off... welcome to Harbinger, Corey. Glad to see you again. :^) My most touching Paula moment....hmmmm. There've been too many occasions when Paula or her music has made my day in some way or another (waving to me from the stage, taking time to talk for a while after shows, etc.). So, to say that there has been only one would be impossible, but the instance that made me think "oh, man... she's just so sweet" happened only a few months ago at Lilith Fair in Michigan. First, I should start by telling those of you who don't already know, that (partly through a lot of generosity on the part of a friend and partly through some degree of sheer luck), I've seen Paula perform something like 12 or 13 times this year. I mention that not to brag (although I'm not above that (hee hee)), but to illustrate the following scenario. Paula and I were sitting on a big equipment case behind the stage and had been talking for quite a while about a lot of different stuff while Fiona Apple performed. I mentioned one of Paula's upcoming performances (in New Jersey - where I live) and she asked if I was planning to attend that show. I told her I wasn't (due to my work schedule) and said that, truthfully, I was a bit surprised that she wasn't getting sick and tired of seeing my face looking back at her at all of the shows that I *have* attended. She laughed and, basically, told me that she is always really happy to see me in the audience. She said it's nice for her to be able to look out and recognize my face and my "big smile." She said it gives her someone to focus on and it's nice to know that at least I'm into the music, even if the rest of the crowd is less than enthused. That one warmed my heart. Another Paula occasion that always makes me laugh when I think about it was something that happened during Paula's performance of "Hitler's Brothers" at a concert at the Roseland Ballroom here in New York City this past New Year's Eve. Paula had just finished off the lyrical and whistling portions of the song and was just nicely getting into the rather frenzied dance portion of the performance (just before she bangs the hell out of Jay's drum). The stage at Roseland is fairly small, so there isn't a lot of space left for dancing around after getting a piano, a trap set and a bunch of amps, etc. out on stage. But Paula was going at her dancing with her usual elan anyway. Just as Paula's dancing brought her within arms' reach of Jay and his drums, Paula stumbled and went flailing into Jay's traps, nearly taking him out of commission in the process. Amazingly, Paula never actually fell down and none of Jay's equipment crashed to the floor (although the high-hat came precariously close to taking a powder....). In fact, the music barely faltered. The audience was roaring with laughter. Unfortunately, most of the crowd was laughing *at* her, not *with* her.... drunk New Yorkers on New Year's Eve and Paula was basically a total unknown. Nevertheless, one of the most memorable moments from that occasion was that Paula caught her balance and turned around to face the audience... laughing. It was great. She just brushed it off and finished the song. The other highlight of that occasion was when Paula sat back down at her piano, after her stumble. Smiling, and still chuckling to herself, she said something like, "You know it's been a long year when you fall into the drums like that..... But that's okay....I'm the hardest working woman in show business! I'm Mrs. James Brown!!!" She cracked up again and started into "Jolene," which managed to wow most of the crowd. So, I guess those have been the great Paula moments for me. Paula is a warm and generous person with one of the brightest, most placid spirits I've ever seen. I'm glad to have had the unbelievable opportunity to follow her tour and her career so closely this year. Paula, Jay, Phil and the rest of the guys have made each show really memorable in one way or another and I truly appreciate their kindnesses. Peace. Microsoft has a website called Music Central. Every day there is an online game called Mr. Quizzy, in which you must answer 2 questions to get to the final round. Some of the questions are quite tough, but at least they are multiple choice. Anyway, one of Thursday's questions was: Paula Cole honed her singing and improvisation skills at what prestigious institution? The Sorbonne in Paris The Berklee College of Music in Boston The Roxy in Los Angeles OK, this post was pointless, but I got a kick out of it (and I knew the answer)!
