The band came back on stage for the last song and played an intro while Paula was offstage getting into her "Diva" costume. This consisted of a short blonde wig, a black coctail dress and black feather boa. Has this not been seen before? Manchester was the first time I had seen Paula live and therefore you will forgive the lack of detail - I was amazed! Holly Palmer (support) was brilliant in her own right. Her voice was amazing in it=92s variety of tonal colour and depth of expression. Her guitarist (is he also her husband?) was most imaginative. The only suggestion I would make is that the addition of a percussionist on two or three of the tracks would further emphasise the strong rhythmic nature of the songs and would increase the dynamic and tonal contrast - but who am I =85 anyway she was great and= the crowd loved her. =09 The venue was a student bar in Manchester University. The room was about half full (approx. 200) which is probably due to the lack of local media coverage of Paula to date. The crowd seemed to be mainly =91hard core=92= fans as they gave Paula an extremely warm welcome from the start and knew most of the tracks already. Phil did a brilliant job on the sound desk and (apart from a minor hitch with Paula=92s wedge monitor on the first song), the mix was clear and powerful and without incident. The nature of the room lent itself to an amazingly intimate atmosphere and I was about 6 feet away from Paula - an experience I won=92t forget. The band were brilliant, especially Jay on= drums who seems to have perfected the art of coaxing tenderness, power and rhythmic drive out of the most unorthodox drum kit I have ever seen. Most of you will have seen Paula live so I won=92t bore you with superlatives - she was simply inspirational. The London gig was the following night and as this has been covered already, I won=92t go into much detail. The only main differences between the gigs= were the size of the venues and crowds (London was a fantastic turnout), Paula=92= s attire and the extra encore at London (mentioned in previous posts) - which was scribbled on Paula=92s set list in felt tip (this must have been chosen= on the last minute as a result of the rapturous applause from the audience). I was fortunate enough to share a beer with Paula and the band in the dressing room after the London gig. They were all very welcoming, especially Paula and Kevin. I managed to discover about Paula=92s Irish roots and= briefly discuss songwriting (my chosen career) before she was dragged off to meet someone who had won a radio prize - no rest for the wicked! =85.this was meant to be brief! - hope it is of interest. Just a final mention for Phil who is doing an amazing job as sound engineer AND tour manager on what is a particularly strenuous tour - he still manages to find time to be a nice guy!
