From what I could see on TV, something happened to her dress right before her performance, so the show had to go to another set of commercials to give her time to fix it. Did anyone at the show see what happened? Paula seemed very friendly toward Dave, but also seemed nervous during the performance. Did anyone think that (perhaps because of the dress problems)? I know she has to promote the new single (IDWTW), but I wish she would do her more vibrant and impressive performances/songs when she is getting such major exposure. What did other people think? Just my two cents, Kristine - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Sep 1997 10:52:47 +0000 From: Kara and Tina Subject: Re: (harbinger) Get People mag Susan, Thanks so much for the tip! The People mag this week is AWESOME!!! It has a picture of Paula as a baby (10 months old) and a current pic of her with her parents. A must-have for any Paula fan! I only wish they had put a larger picture of the wonderful shot in the Contents section. That would make a great poster. And speaking of which, what is up with the lack of Paula merchandise?!?!? Aside from the very few t-shirts at Lilith, there just isn't anything put out by her record company--- (i.e. posters, stickers, hats, t-shirts that will fit the average-sized woman who doesn't care to look like Kate Moss, etc.) I hope when she does her own tour, they get some stuff made! A tour book would be long-overdue and much-appreciated by us hard-core fans! Thanks for listening. I just had to vent. Peace out. I subscribed to this list a week ago or so. The first time I heard of Paula was her video "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone", but it was more or less an "accident" that I was watching a music video channel--! I loved her voice, so the next day I went into town to listen to her CD, but --- I'm living here in Germany, and she doesn't seem to be very popular here: I went to eight shops before I found "This Fire", and to another five shops to get "Harbinger" (I got the only CD in town!). Needless to say, trying to find one of her singles is just as frustrating as trying to persuade God to let it snow in mid-summer. If her concert at the "New Pop Festival" in Baden-Baden wouldn't be sold out, I'd think I'm the only one in Germany who likes her. Noone of my friends has ever heard that name before. I've got a ticket now for her concert in Cologne on September 13th, and I'm really looking forward to it! When I bought the ticket (in an *insider record shop*!, no travel agency or the like!), they asked me: "Paula whooooo?" - "err, Paula Cole" - (the man goes to his ticket computer) - "Could you spell that name for me?" - "Paula C-o-l-e" - "Never heard that name. What kind of music is she making?" Lyrics are one of the most important things for me, almost even more important than the music itself, and I must say that Paula is an excellent lyricist!! My favorite songs would be IDWTW, WHATCG and Road To Dead, perhaps Mississippi, too. The only song I wish she wouldn't have written is "Hitler's Brothers". I first heard "Where have all the Cowboys Gone" on the radio. WDR 2, a rather popular network played it several times a day for at least three weeks. >I loved her voice, so the >next day I went into town to listen to her CD, but --- I'm living here in >Germany, and she doesn't seem to be very popular here: I went to eight >shops before I found "This Fire", and to another five shops to get >"Harbinger" (I got the only CD in town!). Unfortunately, I have to confirm this: I also had to check a lot of record stores before I found "This fire". And I haven't been able to find "Harbinger" yet. Maybe at the Cologne concert? I find this interesting that you feel this way. I didn't care for the music of it the first time I heard it on her "Ordinary" single, but once I got the album and read the lyrics (you're absolutely right, she's a wonderful lyricist!), I began to love what the song says. I'm sure she didn't mean the song as a slight to Germans as a whole (if that is your objection to the song.) However, one must admit that Hitler led the forefront of prejudice and torment of those he deemed "unworthy". The song is a commentary on the prejudices of today's society, even in this supposed age of enlightenment. Also, the song lists acts of racial hatred and violence that have taken place in the U.S., since that is Paula's frame of reference. Anyone who's lived here for any length of time (natural citizens especially) will recognize that these things have happened and still do happen. I see the song as a slap in the face, a wake up slap, if you will. We'd all like to think that we live in a civilized society where we've come to accept others' differences, but the reality is that this is not always so. I, for one, love the song.
