She sings back-up on Natalie Merchant's "Carnival" on TIGERLILY. And I have heard she had a CD prior to JET. I am not sure what it's calle= d though. I think your story goes to show that we should all realize that first impressions are not always correct, especially when it comes to music. I can list so many albums that I really hated when I first heard them, but for various reasons--friends recommendations, reviews, hype--I listened again and often fell in love with the albums. Things like = REMAIN IN LIGHT -- Talking Heads SCARY MONSTERS -- Bowie UNFORGETTABLE FIRE -- U2 LIFE'S RICH PAGEANT -- REM I had the same experience with Katell and, don't kill me, with Paula's TH= IS FIRE. I think what illuminated Paula's CD for me was seeing her live. Often seeing a musician live, I get a new appreciation for the music and the artist. Often the live show is the first tiem I really HEARD the songs. Like "ME" which is now my favourtie Paula song EVER. When I first heard THIS FIRE, I was just not in the mood for the yelling,= abrasive quality of "Tiger" or "Throwing Stones." I wanted an ALL quiet album that day, which I did not get. :-) Now I LOVE it. And then I had that feeling of having heard "I Don't Want to Wait" before= =2E Is this a popular radio song? Really. This post is for those fans looking for Paula Cole music not on HARBINGER or THIS FIRE. For those who are looking for rare, live, Paula Cole...here is a very partial list of what I have found available. BLUE IN THE FACE (soundtrack...you can get this anywhere) Suwannee Jo (odd clarinet mood piece about a fat New Orleans woman who steals other women's husbands. I also have a live version from her opening for Sarah McL that is a bad recording, but a cooler performance.) IMAGO TRAVELLING ROAD SHOW (this is only available through the Imago Record Company. It is a full priced CD with other Imago artists (including Aimee Mann) that includes her original demos of one of my favorite versions of "Bethlehem" on an acoustic guitar with full band and "Saturn Girl" (not too different from the album version, but different enough to make it a fun listening experience.) LAST NOVEMBER (bonus track on "Ordinary" CD single, Available from Imago) I am probably in the minority, but I love this track. It is a quiet guitar piece with a mournful wail of a chorus. HAPPY HOME (Live from the Mountain...ugh. I can't remember the CD name or company. You can order it through Blue Plate Music) Great live version of Happy Home played on acoustic guitar. Another example of a stellar songwriter. I always play this song to "convert" people to Paula's music. JOLENE (I don't own the radio station's recording of this that was released on CD and would love to find it. It's from a radio station in Seattle who are sold out of it. I think B. Titus web page has details. ) I think this is a guitar version. I have a guitar version (good) and a great recording of a piano/drum version of this that just puts me on the floor (from the Troubador show listed below). I was sad she didn't include it on the Lilith tour. ORDINARY (acoustic guitar-live radio broadcast. This is on a compilation CD from an L.A. radio station that is now gone!) This is the first version of the first Paula Cole song I had ever heard. Amazing. Slower and more tragic (but not martyr) version than on Harbinger. LIVE AT THE TROUBADOR (This was taped from the same radio station live broadcast. I have a great copy of it. Unfortunately, since the radio station is gone, you may have a hard time finding this. Has songs from THIS FIRE and HARBINGER. Recorded the first week THIS FIRE was released. This is a must have for true Paula fans waiting for her to release a live album. PETER GABRIEL: Secret World (Available anywhere) This is a couble CD Peter Gabriel album. If you are not a big PG fan--shame on you! Just kidding. Paula is heavily featured with long solos on the 2nd CD on the track "Don't Give Up". You can hear her many times throughout the CD, but that is the track for hearing lots of her and only her. There are many other bootleg live shows that you can find from other fans that vary in quality. I have a few other shows (including Mountain View Lilith) but they are not approved releases and are not great quality. The best place to find someone to trade with is...go to Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) click Music then choose Bootlegs. There is a network of people usually very friendly and willing to trade. It is illegal to sell bootleg copies, but from what I understand, trading is ok. Some people will allow you to send two tapes, they keep one and record your show on the other if you do not have anything to trade. Most traders insist on great quality Maxell (possibly TDK) tapes that are best for CD. Another resource is Goldmine Magazine, but I have not seen any PCole in there. I would be interested in trading for other rare/ unreleased Paula Cole (or Sarah McLachlan...especially her singing the Star Sp Banner+O Canada) but since I live in Finland, I cannot afford to just send tapes if you do not have something I need. Wish I could. Hey all!! NEW artist!!! Anyone heard of Chantel Kreviazuk?? I mean outside of the free Lilith Fair tape that was given away after the show?? This girl has got it going on!!! The song "This is the Way God Made Me" is on the Lilith freebie tape and I really like this woman's sound. She rocks!! I get Much Music here and I pay pretty much all my attention to it and close off MTv and VH-1 anymore. Chantel has a video on the Much Music countdown that I believe is called "Wayne" but I can't say for sure. I only saw it one time since I am busy packing to move again but this woman has definately got something going for her. Also, I have to say I have really been struck with a love for Holly McNarland and her song "Where Do You Fit In??" Does anyone know if she has an album or where I can hear more of her?? Also does anyone know if the first line of "Where Do you Fit In" says,"I'm Still thinking about Elmo"??? I have listened to this over and over in headset and can not make it out. But that is what it sounds like.... "Strange Places" by the innocent looking Abra Moore is a definate pickup. I bought it at Lilith and I love it!!! Abra has a nice sound and adds a fresh new face to today's up and coming female artists. The song "Four Leaf Clover" is just the one of many great titles on this CD. I definately say to check it out, I really think you guys would like it. I am a major fan of Australian music and I have to recommend Leonardo's Bride to anyone who has access to buying import CD's. They are an up and coming band that has been together for 5 years now. If you wanna take a listen to them find out more about them or the possibilty of getting CD's from them then check my link page for a link to their website. Tina Arena who some of you may know from "Chains" is also a HOT pick. She is a Melbourne, Australian lady who has been singing since the age of 8 and has alot of credits to her name despite the fact that the main US release was just made about a year or so ago. Tina appears on the soundtrack of "One Fine Day" and has a 1997 release that is in the works. For those of you who want more information on the artists it can be found at www.son.com/music/artistinfo/ or by going to my link page at www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/1466/links.html If you know a great group deserving of being added to my links page Email me privately. Interesting to me is that the first song of hers that I was just nuts about was Saturn Girl. I had the song for about a year before Harbinger was released, on the Imago Sampler disc, and my friends and I asked her to play it the first night we saw her in a coffee house. She explained that the song just was not easly done with only accoustic guitar accompaniment but politely bargined with us that if we came to her show the next night she would sing the song for us. The next night in Oxford Ohio (an absolute camping trip for those of you who have not been) there we were "fresh" from our 3 our drive and in the front table when they came into set up. Paula acknowledged that we had driven a long way and dedicated the song to us (Satilite Boys???) Its the only time I have heard her do the song live. I know I am rambling but my thought is... can you make some assumptions from the songs that Paula chooses to play and the songs she chooses to not play? Obviously something was special about Saturn Girl to get it on that sampler disc long before anything else was released. Does Paula not like Saturn Girl anymore? She always plays Hittler's Brothers and always pours tremedous emotional energy into it. I think that Hitler's Brothers means alot to Paula??? At the risk of typing more words than any lurker has the right to.... one more thing. This girl has [snip] Chantal is great. I just got her CD and I love "Imaginary Friend". I recommend it to everyone. From what I've heard, she's fairly big in Canada. Anyone have any more info on Chantal? I'd be interested. > Also, I have to say I have really been struck with a love for Holly > McNarland and her song "Where Do You Fit In??" I've only listened to the whole EP a few times, but "Stormy" is a great song. She was also featured on one of the CMJ samplers a year or so ago, but I know nothing about her. I think she's another Canuck. > "Strange Places" by the innocent looking Abra Moore is a definate > pickup. I bought it at Lilith and I love it!!! You have excellent taste, I must say. :) - -Karen - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ End of harbinger-digest V2 #40 ******************************
