In the beginning she was very shy on stage, especially when she played the piano, she would get very introspective and it was hard to hear her lyrics sometimes, more reserved even than Sarah was on some songs when I saw her with Paula in Boston a few years ago. All of them have greatly changed their stage performances over the years. We have to remember, guys, that Fiona is very young (20, I think) and new to this. She will change much before our eyes, which is fun to watch. When I saw her at Great Woods in July, she was obviously trying to establish a connection with the audience, but sometimes it was too much, while I am sure it was genuine (disagree with you, Kenn, but maybe we saw different shows), at least once she sounded like one of the squealing teen-age girls in the audience; once she started to tell the story behind a song, got confused, and said something like, "Oh, maybe I'd better just play it." The people I was with were struck by how mature her songs, lyrics and voice sounded (knowing how youmg she was), and the band was pretty tight. In other words, the music and the performance (she moved quite a bit on stage, maybe about the same amount as Paula) were quite developed. It was only when she spoke to the audience that she sounded rather young and inexperienced, but not shy, I got the feeling she was trying out different things, and trying to be who she genuinely is, which as we all know changes rather rapidly at twenty, or maybe it is that there are so many different parts of oneself to display on stage. Anyway, we enjoyed her performance very much. In fact, we thought she was the third best act after Paula. We actually enjoyed Tracy Chapman as much as anyone at GW Lillith. We had just seen Paula recently and knew she would be great and she did not disappoint. However, it has been a few years since we have seen Tracy and while we thought she was great then, we were pleasantly surprised at how much her whole stage show has improved. She relates just slightly more to the audience during her singing, her band is terrific, her voice as good as ever, and she has so many great songs. Anyway, it has been interesting and fun to watch these sisters develop. And they themselves seem to enjoy watching and mentoring a younger one; at least that is what I got out of the magazine article Anyway, I wish all of you could have watched Paula grow as a performer as I have for more than 10 years. I think it is exciting that all of us are going to be able to watch Fiona grow and change together during her 20's. I would think that in many ways it must be more difficult for a performer to have to grow and develop in front of her audience from a young age. Tracy has changed the least over the years that I have watched her of the 4 women I've mentioned here, I believe, because she was the oldest when we first met her. I guess this is true of anyone in any field, musicians are just more public. So if you get the chance, I think you shouldn't miss Fiona's next stage show, Dave, because if you do you will certainly miss seeing a great performer develop. I love her CD too, but staying home and listening to her on disc, just does not compare with going to see her grow in person, if I have the option. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 10:37:17 EDT From: luvksym90_1@juno.com (Michael George Fulcher) Subject: Re: (harbinger) On-stage personnae On Mon, 11 Aug 97 09:50:42 -0400 "Susan F." writes: >>To put in some Paula content, the two times I've seen her she's been >>amazingly down to earth and *real*. "the world is not only stranger than you think, it is stranger than you can think". anyway aside from that, i would like to propose a smaller more managable idea. that being that we are all much more knowledgeable about each other than we are consciously aware of, but aware of non the less. in the back of our minds in our semi unconscious we know who we are relating to and what a relationship will lead to. again not an idea i would attempt to prove , only one offered as food for thought, with the testament that i have found this to be deeply true in my own experience. the deeper you think, and the deeper your experiences, the less you are fooled by appearances. i beleive we all have a more perceptive mind behind our daily mind, the more perceptive mind chooses the experiences the daily mind goes through. i know i sound a bit out there, and maybe boring but i did want to let rich know i have considered his retort and stand by my mental explorations, and working model of interconectedness. it is hard to answer vague hypothetical situations like you propose about a car crash that didn't happen. in my experience every real situation that does happen makes sence when you go deeper into it. peice - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 1997 00:46:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Povie Subject: Re: (harbinger) nekyia cowboys Hey Honoku...lemme guess: acid dropped twice a day for 4-5 years? - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ End of harbinger-digest V2 #36 ******************************
