Here's my seven cents'... In nicely demonstrating the 'There's Nothing Worse Than a Reformed Alcoholic' addage, I'd like to throw into the fray the possibility that perhaps the real, underlying problem force at work in the dysfunctional situation in the lives of the 'Cowboys' characters (as well as in the lives of, oh, about 7 million other unhappy Americans) is the abuse of the Demon Juice. Now, I'm not the preachy type, but I DO speak from experience: I drank to the passing-out stage nightly for 15 years. In that timespan I had six or seven pretty-serious relationships with women (two- to five-year 'stints'). All eventually ended due to my complete lack of respect for anything--my partner, my job, ME, etc.)--other than booze. Luckily, I never married any of these women. Had I done so, *I* would be having a beer, and *she* would be doing all the laundry. Happily, five-years-sober, I'm finally getting my BA, own a nice home, and am VERY happily and 'successfully' wed. So, the next time you drive by a dilapidated shack with weeds grown high and four broken-down jalopies in the yard-- think of Paula, me, and rampant alcohol abuse, will ya? I'm done yellin'... Chris Povie p.s. Jason: I'm not sure, but I don't think 'disdain' can be used as a verb, as in "you may disdain those folks". You would, I believe, "*Have* disdain *for* those folks." :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 1997 00:48:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Povie Subject: (harbinger) Things are RRRReally heating up over here at Harbinger, folks * Speaking of passionate discussions-- what ever happened to that 'Daniel McKiernan' guy we all thought was loopy? The American Heritage College Dictionary shows not one but two definitions of disdain as a transitive verb.
