When I met Paula she just seemed so at ease with herself and her fans. I hope this continues. :) And I have to say that if I was to ever make a go of my fledgling music career and could work with any musician, it would be Paula. (I'd say Tori, but I just don't know that I could do that...I don't know why.) She's the kind of performer I hope to be one day. :) - -Karen - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 06:32:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Karen Whyte Subject: (harbinger) Re: Fave Paula Song/Jolene On Tue, 29 Jul 1997 Riphug@aol.com wrote: [big snip] > The first time I heard Paula sing "Jolene" (an old Dolly Parton song) was > when I saw her live in concert (as opposed to *dead in concert*?) in > Cincinnati. I wish I'd hugged her. I just didn't think of that. Instead, I let her sign other people's stuff with my Beloved Sharpie (which has been used by Tori Amos, Evan Dando, and Fiona Apple...) and then got my ticket autographed. I gave her a troll that someone gave me for good luck and she smiled and laughed and said that it would be the official tour bus mascot. :) Then we had an awkward moment where I reached out my hand to get my pen back and she shook it. Then she said, "Oh, I guess you wanted the marker back...!" It was funny - we shared a laugh about that. Ack...I feel like I've already told that story here. Sorry if I have before. I'd rather regard Surfacing as not being her "best" album. I do think it is an excellent album, and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Just as FTE is a much different album than Touch and Solace, Sarah takes us in yet another direction with Surfacing. In my mind, FTE is unsurpassed by any album ever recorded. Then there's Paula. I absolutely love Paula's music. I think she's an incredible talent, and rate her right up there with Sarah. I've been lucky enough to see her perform several times, and I'm just blown away by her talent and energy. I've yet to see Sarah perform live, but Lilith is just 6 days away (WooHoo!). Rating the albums? This is tough because they're all so good. FTE is certainly on the top. (I know, FTE wasn't mentioned in the poll because it's #1 by default:) ) Surfacing Vs Harbinger: Harbinger's great, but I must place my vote on Surfacing. This Fire Vs Touch/Solace: I'll give my vote to This Fire Fumbling to lunch now... - - Dan - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Aug 1997 13:06:30 -0400 From: Connie and John Groer Subject: (harbinger) Carmen I LOVE Carmen!! I agree with the opinion about "Hush, hush, hush" could have left out Peter gabriel. Forgive me, but that one kinda sounds like a Disney soundtrack song. Not bad, just not my favorite. But these are just my own personal opinions. I went to see Lilithfair on July 29 at Columbia MD. It was a Paula-less Lilith :( I didn't expect to like either Joan Osborne or Jewel (I usually think of Jewel as "simpering"), but both of them were incredible. I went home and ordered their CDs from CDNow on the Web. Both Joan and Jewel have amazing voices "live". Their videos have never impressed me, nor have their radio-plays. I know I shouldn't judge by the radio!!! But I can't afford to just randomly buy CDs. Since paula wasn't there (sigh), I really went to Lilith to see Fiona Apple and Sarah McLachlan. Both were great. When Fiona was playing, there was a psycho in front of the stage worshipping every word that came from Fiona's mouth. Fiona's set was short but she performed well. I thought that her between-song banter was very insincere and unspontaneous (she'd obviously said exactly the same things many times), and she was "vogue-ing" a bit much with her dancing poses. But I have no complaints about her music performance. And I liked the key she had dangling from her navel ring. Sarah was better than I can describe. Her live performances are SO much beter than her CDs. I love her CDs, but she is 10,000 times better live. She was so good I was near tears. And although I like Surfacing, it's no Fumbing Towards Ecstasy. However, I have a new appreciation for the Surfacing tracks she performed-- Witness, Sweet Surrender, Angel, BAM (am I forgetting any??) But the BEST was her encore where the audience sang along with Ice Cream. Sorry for the heavy non-Paula content, but I'm still in a nice daze about Lilithfair. I guess I'll have to wait to see Paula this fall when she tours. Oh, my FAVORITE from TF is the song ME. That song just gives me chills. Thanks, Paula, for that one!! As I recall, the person who inspired "Carmen" is a friend of Paula's and I believe she was at the concert at the Paradise Club in Boston this past February. I seem to remember Paula mentioning that she was in the audience. It has been my own interpretation that "Carmen" was a woman with whom Paula has a very strong friendship. She appears to be someone from whom Paula learned a great deal about herself and life in general. You know? One of those people who, to paraphrase a favorite poem of mine, helps one to "make of the lumber of [one's] life, not a tavern, but a temple." Perhaps everyone hasn't been fortunate enough to have had that kind of a friendship with another person. Peace.
