I saw her live for the first time at Rockfest back in June. I really like her single "Foolish Games". I bought Pieces of You right after Rockfest and my favorite on it besides "Who will Save your Soul" was "Foolish Games". I love when I pick em!!!! Haven't heard Foolish on the radio--don't know about the video either. Totally agree with the whole Asian women thing--what's up with that??!!! Videos in general are beyond my level of interpretation!! ~Sharley - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 10:58:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Chris Povie Subject: Re: (harbinger) RE: Fave Song I'm responding to Chris's query regarding others' emotions and reactions to Jewel's 'Foolish Games.' I, too, am a 'lukewarm Jewel fan'--SO luke, in fact, that I don't have any of her CDs (she's on the radio every second of the day-- I just hit 'seek' until I hear her!) If there is ANY Jewel song that will make me break down and buy the CD, it's 'Foolish Games.' Each time I hear it, both the somber lyrics and Jewel's plaintive and restrained urgency (and barely disguised depression!) drive me nearly to literal tears (sorta). She is a wonderful singer and a phenomenal talent (plus I liked her boobies on the Grammys!) [pleez no flames...just jokin' aroun'] I only wish that her good name and talent weren't being sullied in my mind by too much airplay. It's kinda like those WONDERFUL shoes I got two years ago--They were SO great and I liked'em SO much, I wore'em every DAY for a year. Guess what? Now I don't even want to look at 'em... Snatches of a few songs with pictures and bio. It's the issue with Blues Travelers and Shaq on the cover (I think it's available thru book stores.) Also...(and I'm VERY sorry I didn't post this sooner) Paula was on MuchUSA last night. If they're like MuchMusic, they repeat incessantly, so you might still catch her. I, unfortunately, don't have the cable station, so I didn't see it. Hope someone out there was/is lucky enough... This isn't the most timely post, however, I've been out of the office and haven't had a chance to post until now. My roommate and I went to see Paula's appearance on Live w/ Regis & Kathie Lee on Monday morning. Let me just say that I'm not accustomed to even being conscious at that time of the morning. So... tromping into New York City to sit in a studio full of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Midwestern tourists while Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford prattle on and on about themselves and their socialite friends and what they did over the weekend (yawn....) is not something I would normally be doing on a day off from work. That is, unless Paula had something to do with it. :) If you watched the show, you know how it went before Paula came out. Regis, Kathie Lee, Joan Rivers.... who really cares? Paula and the guys came out and Paula did an even further abridged version of the radio edit of "I Don't Want To Wait". It was kind of a trip because, in the audience, we could hear Paula bouncing the heel of her black boot-clad foot on the floor to keep time throughout the song. The floors are hardwood in the studio, so it was pretty loud. Could you hear it on television? Then, Mrs. Greenthumbs.... oh, yeah... *Now* I remember why I don't get up until well after noon. :P And, finally, Paula and the guys came back out to do "Cowboys". That whole deal just reamed. Whoever was put in charge of production/stage management that day really treated Paula pretty shabbily. During commercial, they were up there telling her to keep it within two minutes. Why bother then? But, she handled it as gracefully as always. She and the guys started into "Cowboys" and, not even halfway through the song, they cut to commercial. And rather than let her finish the song, the schmuck in charge walks out on the stage and CUT THEM OFF MIDSONG!!!! What an ass!!!! I mean, I know the show is live and there are time constraints, but he was just outright rude about it. Never once did he apologize to Paula or the audience. He just shut it down and suggested that she stand with Regis and Kathie Lee for a closing shot, which, naturally, she did. Boy, you should have seen the look she gave that putz when he cut her off halfway through the song! If looks could kill.... Kathie Lee comment of the day..... "Maybe I should pose nude on the cover of my next CD...." I'm not even going to bother touching that one. ;) I agree that Paula and the guys weren't their usual dazzling selves on that day, but, I saw them after the show outside and it was really apparent that they are just really burnt. Paula and Jay look soooo tired. It's understandaable, though. They've been touring almost non-stop for many months now and I'm sure they all just want to get away from it for a while. Peace. I don't even drink coffee. The most interaction I've ever had with Paula is talk to her for a while after her shows. But it was never anything more intimate than the conversations had with Paula by many of her other fans. Just wanted to make sure others didn't think Paula and I are spending Sunday afternoons at some Starbucks here in Manhattan, talking about Thich Nhat Hanh. :) Peace. I *finally* saw the new video after three weeks of bombarding VH-1 with e-mail message, pleading with them to show it. All I can say is that the new video is sooo cool! It was beautifully filmed and Paula looks fantastic in the period costumes *and* in the other shots where she is shown in a simple white sheath dress. Oh, by the way... there's another period costume that Louis didn't mention. It appeared to me to be something like that of a Babylonian queen. The version of the song used in the video is the radio edit - the one that skips the first two lines of the bridge and picks up at "So breathe a little more deeply, my love." That's really my only complaint about the video. I really wish they'd have just played the whole song. Chopping it up like that just takes something away from the song. The guys who directed the video (their names escape me now, even though I just saw the video the other day) are pretty wel-known video directors and their skill certainly shows in this piece of work. I agree with Louis that there is definitely a certain amount of campiness in the video (especially in the flapper scene and the Louis XIV bedroom scene), but I don't necessarily find the video to be "at odds with the song's lyrics" because I don't agree with many people who feel that a video should be a direct interpretation of the lyrics of the song. The video as an art form has developed into an entirely separate medium that can have a life of its own, almost entirely separate from the song. It can simply be "eye candy" that complements the song, without defining it. From what we've learned about Paula's desire to leave the interpretation of her music to the listener, I can see where she might feel the same way about her videos. The video for "Cowboys" didn't really paint a picture of that song, either. The only image from that video that was pulled directly from the song is the dress. Anyway... the video for "IDWTW" is wonderful and I commend Paula and the directors for their work. I am also very grateful to VH-1 for getting on the ball and putting the video on the air. It's about time they started doing something other than being MTV-Lite. Peace. Mine has to be It's Me. It's just *so* moving, cathartic. > Of course, Road to Dead is a close 2nd.... :) First... hey, Doug! Welcome to Harbinger! You'll find some familiar "faces" here from FTE. My favorite Paula song? Hmmm. It's tough because I love all of them so much. But, I definitely do have my absolute favorites. So, I'm going to say "Road To Dead" because it is such a great song on the CD and (as I've mentioned in the past), in the live performance, Paula and the music fuse into one spirit. The little blurb she has usually given before performing "RTD" about the history of Eastern dance (a/k/a bellydancing) is made real once Paula starts into the song, accompanying herself with finger cymbals. A focused expression comes over her face as she starts the cymbals into the rhythm that weaves through the song. And, at some point while you're watching her perform the song, you realize that you're seeing the spirit of music right in front of you. That might seem a bit corny, but the words to aptly describe the phenomenon of Paula doing "RTD" escape me. The first and second runners-up for favorite Paula song? Definitely "The Ladder" as first runner-up. Aside from being lyrically significant to me, Paula's gospel background is very evident in "The Ladder" and her voice simultaneously emotes hopefulness and wearied sorrow. And, finally, the second runner-up would be "Feelin' Love" because it's just so damned sexy!! Most Honorable Mention: "Me," "I Am So Ordinary" (especially live) and "Last November". Peace.
