I think voice training has a lot to do with it. The general public doesn't usually consider the voice an "instrument," able to be manipulated to do what we want it to. But it really is. Opera singers know this, as do many who have had extensive training ON the voice (people like Tori Amos have had musical training, but not necessarily on the voice.) I think Paula's jazz background has really given her the ability and training to work her voice unlike most singers, which is definitely a blessing for those of us who listen to her. Of course, now and then, we get people with natural ability. I'm glad you mentioned Happy Rhodes, because I LOVE her, have everything she's put out (except the instrumental ambient stuff--not really to my liking), and am CONSTANTLY amazed at her vocal ability and range. I like to think I have a good range, but NOTHING like Happy does. She just makes my toes curl... :-) Anyway...good observations and I'm glad you mentioned the people you did. It's nice when fans are varied. (Now to just find someone (enough) who likes Andreas Vollenweider enough to start a list for him...) Gosh, I would love to be independently wealthy and have been a road groupie, traveling from faire to faire--would that not have been the BEST summer?? Anyway... Knowing Regis/Kathy, they'll first have her do a single, with any luck IDWTW because Cowboys is really already overdone. Then they may let her do another of her choice. They usually let Tori do two, one single, one choice, so let's hope they're as generous with Paula. Speaking of Regis and Kathie Lee, did anyone see k.d. lang on the show last Friday? She did a single from her new album, and then did a DUET with Kathie Lee, whom they called k.l. gifford. Gifford even tried to dress in an outfit to look like k.d.'s pinstripe suit, but to no avail. They looked nothing alike. Especially with Gifford's 5 inch spiked heels. They sang, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. I found it kind of weird. Did anyone else see it? I doubt if Paula will be doing a duet with Gifford on the song Carmen like she did with Sarah. We will see though. I agree with you, Spanish. It's exciting to watch Paula's musical evolution. I've seen her perform so many times this year (something like 12 or 13 performances just since January) and every single time I see her, she has grown even further. She appears to just keep challenging herself to pull that energy from deeper and deeper places and allowing more free rein to her voice. There are moments in her performance when her voice is such a clarion and then she will turn into a rumbling growl the next. The depth of her sound (musically and vocally) is becoming so evident in her live performances. You don't hear it as much on either of the CDs, though. That elemental power isn't anywhere near as evident on the recordings as it is live. I think that might change on the next CD. It appears to me that Paula has learned quite a few new tricks since _This Fire_ was released and one of them is that she can let that tiger grow as tall as he wants and she'll just keep sounding better and better. > it seems like other contemproary artists have a pure tone (ex. sarah) > but little power to back it up. i dont know if that comes from a lack of > emotion or just the lack of physical strength to let the sound come out. I think it's both. I sing. Not for audiences, mind you, but I've got a pretty good voice (and no humility - hee hee). I find that, although I have the power behind my voice that comes from knowing how to breathe, where to pull the sound from and where to let the sound go, I don't necessarily always have a grasp on the emotion of any given song. That takes more practice for me. I have to delve into my own caves to find my own inspiration for that sound. Perhaps it's the same for other singers. > there are three people off the top of my head that i find trouble fitting > onto the spectrum though.. wll maybe 2. since i have been > turned onto happy rhodes by kenn, i find her range sooo amazing. one > moment i think im listening to kate bush, and the next theres some guy > with this clear bass voice... all from the same body!!! Happy is such a gift to those of us who can get lost in a person's voice. She is so consisent, so perfectly controlled and has such a remarkable range. I only wish she performed live concerts more often. I'm going to start campaigning to see her on the Lilith Fair bill next year. I don't think she could have the draw to put her on the main stage, but she'd wow them on the second or acoustic stages. She's unforgettable. And, I'm glad you checked her out, Spanish. _The Keep_ is probably my favorite Happy CD, so you made a good choice. She has something like 9 CDs under her belt, so buying her other stuff should keep you busy for a while. :) > and then theres two voices that i think are more like an actual > instrument than i means to convey lyrics... liz fraser from the cocteau > twins and lisa gerrard from dead can dance... to me, they simply go off > the scale.. I've only heard Liz on one of Dead Can Dance's CDs, so I can't really speak on her, but I agree wholeheartedly about Lisa. She *does* use her voice exclusively as an instrument. As much as I adore Happy's voice, Lisa probably has the most perfect voice I've ever heard. And that in addition to being very intelligent and heartbreakingly beautiful. Peace. Thursday night, I was leaving work and happened by the newsstand downstairs where I saw the most recent issue of Billboard. I thought I'd check it out to see if it contained any news about Sarah McLachlan's new album. I picked up the magazine and thought to myself, "Hmmm... I wonder who might be on the back cover this time...." I really expected to find a picture of Sarah. Nope. It's PAULA!!!!! Again!!!!! YEA!!!!!!!! *Great* photo at the top of the page. It's a head and shoulders shot. Her hair is down and she's wearing a purple print shirt. Here's how the ad reads..... (Please bear in mind that this is another one of those schlocky pieces of copy that WB has been churning out for their print ads to promote Paula)..... ********************************************************************************** sigh It's that uncomfortable pause between GOLD and PLATINUM. Sure, Paula Cole's "This Fire" is certified Gold, but it's a breath away from Platinum -- maybe the industry should have a term for Gold-and-a-half. Gold point five? Gold plus, _plus_? Whatever. As the multi-format smash "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" (they've gone GOLD silly!) neatly segues into the new single, "I Don't Want To Wait" (BDS _city_, baby), we're deciding what to wear to Lilith Fair. ********************************************************************************** OK... so the copy is enough to make you want to gag, but she's on the back cover of Billboard again (most awesome) *and* she's definitely going to hit Platinum soon. Congratulations, Paula!!!!!! Peace.
