In response to this inquiry, my sister atteded the Great Woods (Mansfield MA) Lilith Fair show this week, and heard a radio interview with Paula. I've been back out here in NY since early Tuesday morning, but since then I've been trying to get back up to speed, so I haven't posted until now with a review. Seriously...a week a breathing that oxygen-rich air back in Michigan has left me feeling rather groggy. Or maybe it was all the home cooking. My mom was practically force feeding me the entire time. I need to get to the gym.... :) Anyway.... I'm feeling a little more lucid now, so here's the review of Paula's appearance at Pine Knob on the 18th and 19th. Paula's set on both days was the same: Throwing Stones Mississippi Me Jolene Cowboys Tiger I Don't Want To Wait Hitler's Brothers The main stage crowd on Friday was a bit sparser than that on Saturday, but they were definitely getting into Paula. Quite a few people (on both days) seemed to be familiar with Paula's music, but most of those in attendance appeared to have never seen her perform live before (if they had heard anything other than Cowboys at all). Friday's performance was pretty awesome for me because our seats were third row center and there was hardly anybody sitting in front of us. Aside from the obvious cool factor of getting to sit that close to Paula while she dazzled us with her wonderful art, I also managed to snap off two or three photos before the mall-cop-cum-usher decided to rain on my parade by telling me I could only take photos if I had a press pass. Wretched woman. However, not to be daunted, I just waited until the people behind me stood up to allow other people to pass by them and snapped off two more shots. HA! Can't keep a good fan down! Saturday was definitely the better of the two days, with regard to the performance of Paula and the guys and the audience reaction. There were so many times throughout her set that the audience was hootin' and hollerin' and applauding. The best example of this was during the pregnant pauses between verses in "Jolene" when Paula does the back bends and other interpretive dance moves. She managed to work the PK crowd up in a big way. By the end of their set on Saturday, there were very few people left in the entire pavillion who weren't on their feet. Paula had a huge smile on her face as the crowd rose to give her and the guys a standing ovation. The four of them came out to take a bow and the audience was voicing its approval. I spoke with Jay after their set and he said that they had had a lot of fun performing their set that day. I told him that it showed. Jay also mentioned that he felt that was as close as they get to a perfect set. I have to agree. The only performance I've seen before in which Paula and the guys put forth that kind of electricity was at the Paradise Club in Boston on the night I met our dear Judy. Hey, Judy! ;-) I also spoke with Paula for a while after the show. She seemed very pleased with their performance as well. We talked about the article in REQUEST. She hadn't read it yet, so I filled her in on the details and told her that I thought it was the best article on her yet. She was laughing when I told her about the part of the article that said something about one not being able to imagine the phrases "nervous breakdown" or "couldn't get a date" when thinking about Paula Cole. She looked so beautiful. She had changed into a long black linen gauze dress which was covered by a cream-colored gauze sheath. Her hair was tied back. We talked for a few minutes about the set and how she's been feeling. She said she's feeling much better now after her bout with the bug that was working it's way through the LF musicians. The other thing I noticed that I hadn't before is the incredible color of Paula's eyes. Wow! They're like a light blue/green color, but they've got grey in them, too. Really amazing. I think it kinda embarrassed her because I completely lost my train of thought with whatever it was I was saying to her and said, "Wow, Paula... you have really beautiful eyes!" Oh, well.... :) I also saw Phil on Friday and Saturday which is always great. Phil is absolutely the coolest guy. I managed to snap a quick shot of him at the soundboard at one point. Also, saw Adam Simone (one of Paula's roadies) and talked to him for a few. Well.... tomorrow I'll be at Lilith Fair at Jones Beach. Paula won't be. :( Can't win 'em all. As a reminder, Paula will be on Regis and Kathie Lee on Monday, the 28th. Keep your fingers crossed that whoever gets called on the phone to answer the trivia question calls out my seat number after they win. I need a new VCR!!! :) Also.... is anyone from this area planning to attend the Letterman taping next month? I *will* be there!! No doubt in my mind. Let me know if you're going to go. But... be prepared. If you're serious about getting in, you can't show up at 8:00 a.m. or later and think you're going to have a shot at getting into the show. You really do have to be there EARLY. It's worth the wait. Promise. Let me know. Peace. I think that we fans *are* the most worthy of criticizing the work of these musicians. Who else is more worthy? The reviewers from the NY Times or Entertainment Weekly? I don't think so. They're probably still trying to figure out which one his Paula Cole and which was is Holly Cole. Most of them certainly have no concept of the scope of any given musicians work. Even the reviewers from Rolling Stone or other music magazines can't always be trusted to accurately critique CDs because, depending upon the slant of their magazine's image, they can be very biased. When that happens, artists are very often rated unfairly. > but on the whole, although i like surfacing, im disappointed that after 3 > years of waiting this is what she comes out with. These are my sentiments also. I don't hate Surfacing. Far from it. *Any* new Sarah music is a blessing at this point. However, I'll be curious to find out for myself how long this album sticks with me. Right now, I'm thinking it might spend about as much time in my CD player as Touch has. > i guess i was hoping that the hint of power she displayed on dear god > would be translated into this record.
