I totally agree, Chris. You post was well-written. From what I've read here and somewhere else, she said she had a big case of writer's block while working on "Surfacing". Sometimes artists go through a dry spell creatively. That must be a big difficulty considering that contracts have to be fulfilled and so on. If Sarah isn't confident about her latest work, I'm sure that will help her write the next one. In our darkest hours and moments of failure, we often find that voice...those words that need to come out. (Boy, that was poetic, eh?) I've not heard the album, so I can't say. But I agree that Sarah needs fans to give her feedback, as do most artists. I mean, how do you grow without knowing what people like or dislike about your creations? I would definitely rather have the criticism from fans, who really care, than critics, who could give a rat's ass. > So, can we have a little less humility here, and a little more pride in > being the select few people in the population who can actively discuss > wardrobe, set lists, stage lighting, hair style, public appearances and > shaving habits of any number of talented young ladies in the musical > field?! (she was the least anorexic of all the woman performers also.) she was a woman, and sang like one. a very strong, full voice. the feeling was not forced, or summoned up from somewhere deep down in soul. she was one with the band. a very well-developed singer and performer. sara seemed a bit nervous. she talked a little about how happy she was to be performing with other talented female artists. she sang some new, some old. talked about being depressed, but that now singing the songs brought her joy - since she was no longer "there." i think she seemed to TRY to perform well, if that makes sense. she was looking for audience approval, unlike paula or tracy. needed reassurance. others knew that they were good. didn't seem to care what we thought it seemed like live performance doesn't come naturally to her. she has to try... my friend responded: - --->here is a chance to show your writing skills. [coming naturally/having to try]. What does the last sentence and 1/2 mean to you? i wrote back: here is my last attempt at explaining something that is just a feeling, an opinion, a thought, my reaction to sara's performance at lilith fair... i believe that sara is talented poetically, artistically and musically. she has the gift of intellect and spirit. however, i think that her live performances are a major endeavor for her, something that is not necessarily intrinsic in her nature. some people bring their ideologies and philosophies to the platform (to the stage) with a innate ability. sara walks on to the stage anxious, but tenderly. her performance is an offering, a display of her talents. the audiences' approval is the assurance she covets. with that acceptance, she is able to perform, and hopefully to continue her art and composition. the end. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 97 15:42:15 -0600 From: Casey Subject: (harbinger) 'Surfacing' lyrics now online http://www.tisd.net/~casey/sarah/lyrics/surfacing.txt All the lyrics to 'Surfacing' can be found at the URL above. You can sometimes find it in used CD stores, but the radio station that put the CD out (KMTT in Seattle) is completely out of copies. They've been out of them for the better part of a year now. Good luck in your search. It really is a great rendition of the tune, too. It's acoustic. Peace. I have no idea how many they have remaining, or how you can get ahold of them, but as of July 12, they had some available (I remember being quite shocked). I'd suggest going to http://www.kmtt.com, and seeing what info is available. I'd offer to be of more assistance, but I'm heading out of town. Maybe another Seattlite could offer? :-) Dave P.S. Their *first* compilation of live cuts is completely sold out and only available in used CD stores. And, they have a third one coming out this fall/winter...The first two are fabulous. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 1997 18:57:26 +0000 From: Kara and Tina Subject: (harbinger) new Paula article Hey everyone!
