Now that's a hunk of change! I've read other artists, such as shawn colvin, say that the only way she makes money is by touring. As a result, she tours almost all year round. That's great for the fans, of course, but can you say, "burnout?" ~jean :) - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 1997 11:28:52 -0400 From: Burr Subject: (harbinger) [harbinger] Cole infiltrates culture First, thanks to everybody who responded to my little CD review for This Fire. All of your input was appreciated, both public and private. I also wanted to relate an anecdote on how Paula's touch has been filtered into a cultural influence. At the annual conference of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (lighting designers, manufacturers, researchers) in August, the keynote address is titled, "Where have all the lighting professionals gone?" Thought you might get a kick out of that. Just wanted to tell you guys that the video clip site Larry mentioned is awesome! I believe Paula is hissing in "Jolene", but I'm not sure now cause this stupid computer at my university won't allow me to turn on the sound, so I see her but no sounds. Yes, but not for the reason you think. What makes you believe this has anything to do with Paula's song? Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" is much more deeply engrained in our culture, to the point that I would not be surprised if Paula's writing was influenced by the line. Seeger undoubtedly has a greater cultural influence than Paula at this point in her career. He has been writing, performing, recording, and active in the forefront of political protest for at least 50 years. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |Rich Ahrens | Homepage: http://www.visi.com/~rma/ | |rma@visi.com |-----------------------------------------------| |"In a world full of people only some want to fly - isn't that crazy?" | - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 1997 14:53:03 -0400 From: "Burr" Subject: Re: (harbinger) [harbinger] Cole infiltrates culture On Jul 22, 1:01pm, Rich Ahrens wrote: > Burr wrote: > > I also wanted to relate an anecdote on how Paula's touch has been > > filtered into a cultural influence. You may be right, but I find the coincidence of a top-40 song title and a speech title sharing a title to be a bit too convenient. I'll let you know if it's mentioned in the opening comments when I return. I just saw an unidentified quote which I'd like to relate back to my music review. "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." Since I'm an architect and lighting designer, I got a kick out of that one. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the title similarity is from Paula's hit song, though you may be right that it goes back to Seeger. I suppose it would be worthwhile to question Paula whether Seeger did influence WHATCG. Arrrgh! I'm not sure what is worse... NOT knowing what i am missing whilst paula is on tour, or actually downloading the video clips and KNOWING what i am missing. Sigh. They finally played IDWTW here in my area and i liked the version i heard. Still had the same beginning and ending, and only part of the bridge was cut; it said: so breathe a little more deeply my love all we have is this very moment and i don' t want to do what his father and his father and his father did i want to be here now. The song seemed to have a bit more of an acoustic guitar riff for rhythm. It was great to hear. ~jean - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 1997 21:52:25 -0400 (EDT) From: HunterXTC@aol.com Subject: (harbinger) jeff buckley and paula did anyone hear paula mention on hard rock live awhile back that one of the few people she could name off the top of her head she wanted to work with was jeff buckley??? theres an excellent article in interview magazine this month about jeff, with some big full page pictures. it is a chat with marianne faithfull and her times with him. im not a real believer in the ways and means of religion, but if there were angels and they had a voice, i would think that voice would sound like jeff buckley. a talent gone far too soon.... oh and by the way.. thanx to the person who posted the lillith movie site with paula... shes doing the human beat box thing... its fantastic!!! still wondering who would win a beat box contest between doug e fresh, the human beat box from the fatboys.. and paula :) spanish - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 1997 00:15:45 -0400 From: Phil Sullivan Subject: (harbinger) Paula Cole / Jones Beach update ! Contrary to something I posted a few weeks back, Paula Cole will NOT be performing at the Jones Beach Lilith Fair show on July 25th. We just finished up a great show here at Great Woods in Massachusetts ( home for most of us ). This leaves 2 more Lilith dates for Paula. July 24th in Hartford and July 26th in Holmdel, NJ. Again, Paula will not be at the Jones Beach show on July 25. It is a long story...............
