I've resubscribed with my new address, Pipkyn@aol.com. Also...I wanted to post what the L.A. Times wrote about Paula at the Lilith Fair, since it seems I'm the only one on the list (who posts) from CA: (It's not necessarily an overly positive review, I'm sorry to say...) WITH LILITH FAIR, THE TALENT SHOWS --Mike Boehm July 11, 1997 ...Cole has undisguised diva ambitions and is apparently willing to do almost anything to achieve them, including, on this day, turn up in a purplish belly dancer's costume. She pushed her powerful voice beyond its limits and into a painful, shrilling zone; she essayed some flights and flutters that veered off course. She bunnyhopped barefoot and posed shamelessly. [Ed: she's supposed to pose shameFULLY??] But she also showed a real spark of intelligence, such as the puppet-like dancing that underscored the sardonic current in her enigmatic hit about female subservience, "WHATCG?" And her overarching theme, a worthy one, was the climb from subservience to independent selfhood. Cole tried nakedly (well, semi-nakedly) to impress, some of her lyrics were heavy-handed, and she gave a presentation that wasn't classic at all, but totally over-the-top. The thing is, for all her mistakes, she was never dull. Some day she'll tone it down a bit, but for now there's a special pleasure in watching a young, developing talent grab for the brass ring with unabashed, if sometimes awkward, intensity. ------- It would have been nice if Mr. Boehm had also incorporated some mention of her earlier performance on the village stage and perhaps had compared the two performances. He seems to be forgetting that she's on a stage in front of almost 15,000 people and that some of us were watching an ant on stage--the "over-the-top" movements made her more watchable from that distance. As for her "painful, shrilling zone," Mr. Boehm obviously isn't paying attention to her words. Paula specifically states that she had developed the voice of a doll; her screams, grunts and groans are her exclamations to the world that she will no longer be content to stand by and be discounted, but instead demands to be heard. Oh well...whatever. Sorry. I was watching the music channels, which I don't do very frequently because there's so much garbage. But fate had me there and I saw Paula's video. I was entranced and could tell there was so much going on with her artistically. So I bought This Fire and my suspicions were confirmed. Such raw emotion!! Sometimes it's hard to listen to some of the anger/pain venting. But I LOVE it. So of course, I had to buy Harbinger. More confirmation of a truly inspired woman. Last night my husband and I were driving home on a three-hour trip from visiting family and we were listening to Paula, Sarah McLachlan, and Fiona Apple and we started talking about differences between these female artists and the majority of male artists. I think the difference lies in their willingness to express real and raw emotion that makes their songwriting so incredible. No "Hot for Teacher" crap here. I can sometimes appreciate meaningless good tunes (Not "Hot for Teacher"-- I hate that!!!!!) from talented bands, but the music I really love generally has to have some meaning behind it. I think Paula is incredible, and God willing, will continue to amaze us for a long, long time. I have enjoyed reading this list for the last week after I subscribed-- and the REQUEST article was wonderful!! I live in a rural area and our (minor) music stores are filled with Hanson, Spice Whores, etc. so I order most of my music from the Internet sites. No way we'll ever see a REQUEST here! So I truly appreciated the time I know it must have taken to get that article to the list. Thank you! I'm going to Lilithfair on July 29 and Paula is not on the list of performers :( I'm still pretty excited about going, but I really wish Paula would just show up for a surprise visit. I've enjoyed reading the reviews of her performances at Lilith so far, but I must say-- I'm so jealous!! And yet I'm still happy for you. Someday I WILL see Paula. Hopefully headlining her own show. I don't know about PNC, but at JB, she's supposed to be on the second stage. Peace. All of the ads in the NJ papers don't mention Paula at all- neither does Ticketmaster. But the Arts Center says that she will be there. It's the last day on the tour for her, I believe. On the second stage at PNC is Juliana Hatfield & Victoria Williams. Though I'm still not sure where they'll have a 2nd stage. The place is rather small. I believe that she had been planning to do that venue from the very beginning. It was just Jones Beach that she wasn't going to do. Well... it's Jersey. Perhaps we expect to much from them. No flames, please.... I live in Jersey, so I'm speaking of what I know. :) Peace. Sorry. Hey, Connie! Welcome to the list. Don't ever be afraid to post. It's a much better environment around here if more people offer their thoughts to the mix. And it doesn't matter at all how you became a fan of Paula's... all that matters is that you found her. Besides, "Cowboys" is a great song (even if it is *really* overplayed)! > I think Paula is incredible, and God willing, will continue to amaze us for > a long, long time. I second that emotion. Being in New York City, I get spoiled sometimes because almost anything that's up for grabs is here. So, I try to remember my formative years in the cultural wasteland of rural Michigan when it comes to stuff like this. Glad you enjoyed it! > Someday I WILL see Paula. Hopefully headlining her own show. Oh, definitely! You absolutely have to see her in her own show. Especially if you can catch her at a small venue. Best of luck, Connie! Peace.
