[Riphug@aol.com] Re: (harbinger) pbs tape [Honoku@aol.com] (harbinger) Paula and the 'Cowboy' Mixes on MTV News ["Kenn Carpenter" Subject: (harbinger) Lilith L.A., CA Hi all, Well, I'm not sure I'll do justice to reviewing the concert as eloquently as others have done with theirs, but here goes... I got there a bit after 3pm and people were lining up to get in. We finally made it thru the gate around 3:30 and began trucking up to our lawn seats (waaaaaay at the top of the venue). As we came into the village there was someone on stage but it was hard to hear who it was. I assumed that it was one of the locals. Then I suddenly recognized the music--it was "Bethlehem"! Oh my goodness, IT WAS PAULA! I ran over (left my friends in the dust) and got into the groove. I don't know if she sang something before this song or not. After the song she thanked the audience and said "Wow, I love this much more than the main stage--more intimate!" Then she went on to introduce the next song...it was "Jolene." She did a great, wonderful, fantastic job--as usual. The crowd was really getting into it, especially with all the grunts and screams and stuff. Paula had so much energy!! After that she introduced the band, thanked the audience again, and said she'd see us on the main stage later. As soon as she got off the stage she was bombarded with fans for handshakes and autographs. Being as we still hadn't gotten our places and the lawn was filling up, we figured we'd better go--who knew how long it would be before I was able to push my way up to shake her hand and babble something incoherent about how much I loved her. Oh well... Later on the main stage... I have to agree with the other reviewers--the sound could have been better. It wasn't loud enough and was sometimes hard to hear, especially when Paula softened her voice. Her set was: Throwing Stones Mississippi Me ...Cowboys Gone I Don't Want To Wait She thanked the audience before "I Don't..." and said it was her last. But I guess the audience was really receptive and the earlier stint got Paula going because she got up, walked to the center stange, turned to her guys for a second, then introduced another song--"Hitler's Brothers" From what I've read from other posts, she's not done anything from Harbinger yet, so I'm assuming this was the first time on the main stage. It was really great! I was so impressed by her energy and dancing around. My friend--who only knew the few songs I'd recorded for him so he would at least know who Paula was at the concert--mentioned that he loved the way she moved, so fluid and energetic. Listening to a local station on the way home, someone from the Fair called in. When the DJ asked her who she was most impressed with, she said "Oh, Paula Cole. She had so much energy and really got the audience going, which was really great given that she was probably the one who's music we're least familiar with." That's our Paula!! Anyway...everyone else was pretty good. I could have had more Paula and less Jewel, but that's me. Still, I think for energy and fun and just really being into her own music, Paula wins. Even at the piano she was moving and wiggling, with her arms waving and her head swinging. A truly amazing woman...! Irene...very tired at 1:30am but very happy to have seen Paula! - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 1997 02:14:14 -0700 From: "design" Subject: Re: (harbinger) Lilith L.A., CA I am sooo jealous! I am really happy to hear that Paula got more time and even made an appearance on the second stage. Too cool! Who was backing her? The entire band? Was it acoustic? Wow! I had lunch with my brother-in-law yesterday and we were just talking about music and stuff (he's a tie-dyed-in-the-wool classic rock only type)... and I put the Harbinger CD on... We kept talking and when "Hitler's Brothers" came on, he took notice... asked who it was with the passionate voice. He called today and asked if I knew that Paula had another CD out now... he now owns Harbinger and This Fire... heeheehee Thanks for the review Irene! Not really any different than the main stage set-up, just much more up close and personal. The media was all there--videos, cameras, etc. Obviously I got home way late so I have no idea what they showed on the news, but they were there. (Note to self: Buy newspapers today!!) The only difference was her clothing. She was wearing a slinky long, black slip dress with sandals and her hair in a knot in the village and on main stage she was wearing a bikini top with matching saronge skirt (it was hard to tell exactly if there was a print but it was a red/white patterned fabric), barefoot, with a gold chain (belt?) around her bare tummy (that the guys in my group apparently really appreciated). :) > He called today and asked if I knew that Paula had another CD out >now... he now owns Harbinger and This Fire... heeheehee Ah...I LOVE making new converts! Actually, I remember the first time I heard "H.B."--it was on the "Ordinary" single, and I wasn't impressed. However, once I saw Paula in concert (opening for McLachlan) and heard her soaring vocals, I gained a WHOLE new appreciation for her. I think I just about wore out my copy of Harbinger! Also, when I settled down with the lyrics and understood what "H.B." was about, it became one of my favorites on the album (I'm a lyrics person--even if the music doesn't grab me, if the lyrics are good and speak to me, I love the song!). Anyway, Larry, great job with your brother. First, family; next, THE WORLD!!! > Thanks for the review Irene! You're welcome. Yeah, I've got that single, but don't play it often at all. I just don't get into listening to ten different versions of one song on a continuous basis. If you have random play on your CD player, though, it could be fun. I like all the remixes, but some of them sound very much the same. In my opinion.... no. I think they're really abominable. I don't know if anyone else caught Paula on MTV News earlier this week (on Tuesday, the 8th), but they caught up with her at the Blockbuster Festival down in Texas at the end of last month and asked her what they thought about the Cowboy remixes. The spot went like this (in part): ************************************************************************************** When you think club music, the ska group and folk sounds of No Doubt and Paula Cole aren't likely to be the first things that come to mind, especially their more slow-tempo hits. But Coles' melancholy "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" has spent weeks on the club-play and dance singles - no to mention a top ten spot on the pop charts - thanks to the maxi-single of several remixes.... ...When both Paula Cole and No Doubt played the recent Blockbuster Rockfest in Fort Worth, Texas, we learned that Cole's got mixed feelings about remixes. "I think they're weird," Cole said. "But sometimes weird is good. Sometimes you have to let go and not be so anal retentive and let other people do things to your music." ************************************************************************************** As a sidenote.... No Doubt was less than enthused about the idea of their song "Don't Speak" being remixed as a club tune. If you are interested in checking out this article, check out the MTV website. The URL that will pull you right into the archived news is: http://www.mtv.com/news/gallery For those of you fortunate enough to have a soundcard, you can also run and hear the .mov files that are clips from the actual spots on MTV News. I've got QuickTime, so I can *see* Paula, but I can't hear her. :( There are other clips about Paula in the archive, too. Almost all of them have .mov files you can run. Peace.
