I have to say I too was disappointed but none of it has to do with Paula's performance except for her not doing 'Jolene'. My main disappointment was with the idiots at Ticketmaster. We arrived at the Gorge at 10:33am and waited in line til 2:30pm when they finally decided to let the mass of people in. Once in we went down to the main stage trying to locate the soundbooth where I had arranged to meet Phil Sullivan. I got to the gate and was informed my tickets would not allow me access to the soundbooth or anywhere I could even get a picture of Paula. I was directed to Guest Services where they told me to write a note to Phil and they would "try to" get it to him. My heart sank in despair and I felt certain I would not be able to reach Phil when the girl at Guest Services said for me to come back just before Paula's set and she would escort me to the soundbooth and see that I could talk to Phil. I was lucky to be around the media center during a press conference that was taking place. I got the chance then to see Sarah, Jewel, Cassandra and someone from MudGirl. It also gave me the opportunity to get a few pics of the four. After that we went to find food and listen to Mudgirl and wair patiently for Leah Andreone. We waited and waited and finally about 4:30pm someone working wih the show was up around a stage marked Second Stage. Second Stage is where we were told Leah would be proforming but this "Second Stage" was not a functioning stage so we were directed back up a hill to another stage where we arrived just shortly before Leah's 20 min set. She looked really bad unlike the last time I saw her perform at a smaller show on Easter. I was so unhappy with the way she looked in stained up purple bell bottoms and a black and silver shirt that featured a rather lage hole in the left shoulder. Her voice and performance were both great and she was a very personable girl who took time after the show to meet her fans and sign autographs. Then I went down to the Guest Services booth again to get escorted down to the soundbooth and to meet Phil. The girl took me down but Phil was on the main stage finishing the setup for Paula on the main stage. I was told I could wait for Phil but once I saw him I was too immediately leave and return to the open grass seating area. I agreed and the girl left. A few minutes later Phil came to the booth and I got a chance to speak with him a few. I told him about my ticket problem and asked about the chance I could meet Paula when he informed me her cousin could not even see her. My heart again sank as I was told I had to leave. I went to a speaker and wrote Phil a note and wished them the best for tour as I fought back tears. I was so unhappy about the way Ticketmaster had been with ticket sales. I walked over and handed Phil the note and he asked if I was going to the Salem show still as I had planned but I told him I had to sell the tickets. He then offered to put me on the list for that show and I accepted his offer with great thanks. We said a few more words and I proceeded out of the fenced area with a smile on my face and even a greater admiration for Paula and the crew. We went back out to the grassy area by guest services and by the media center where I took a seat and waited for Paula. I was so happy to finally see her after the long hot day. She was wonderful!!!!!! Her performance could have been a bit louder but I am sure as with everything the first day is always rough. Her set was only 30 min which was a bit depressing I must admit but that is not her fault. I sat on the grass and watched in awe as she sang. The set included 'Mississippi', 'Me','Cowboys', 'Tiger', 'Hitler's Brothers' and the new single 'I Don't Want to Wait'. The songs were all well done and I screamed my lungs off in hopes for 'Jolene'. The grunting was a bit out of proportion for the style of music she does but all in all the show was great. 'Hitler's Brothers' done live seemed to have a hard bassier sound than that on the CD and it really rocked. There was no 'Jolene' and none of the cuts off "harbinger". No finger cymbals, no masks and other nice effects. I don't know how Lilith is regulated but maybe Sarah does not allow for artists to be really creative during the tour as they can be at smaller shows. We left after Paula's set which was fine to me since I personally since I don't care too much for Jewel and Phil had told me he would see me in Salem. So took trek for our 6+ hour drive and headed home. It is not quite noon here now and I have been awake some 2 or 3 hours now with terrible pain from a sunburn. My keys accidently got locked in the car and we are unable to find someone with a spare. I am determined to make today's show and see Paula once more in all her glory if it is only for 30 min. :) Lilith Fair shops do have a nice Paula T-shirt and other items including Jewel, Sarah and Tracy as well as Lilith items. They can be a bit spendy so make sure and bring your wallet. T-shirts are in the $20 to $30 range, there is also a compilation CD available and supplies are a bit limited on those. On your way out also they give away cassettes of new up and coming female artists so make sure and pick one up. The only thing I dd notice is that Leah, Suzzanne and a many of the other artists took time to talk where after her set Paula scurried off to her trailer with escorts. I did get a chance to wave at her and say Hi from a distance but she was never anywhere you could just chat or get an autograph. Also, for you who don't know Phil Sullivan is Paula's sound board operator and the sound board operator for Sarah and others is not the same as for Paula. He seemed very busy and again it was only day one and things always are rough the first time around. Phil is a very nice man and I wish the crew behind Paula the best on this tour. May she have a long and successful career. :) My continued support to Paula and best wishes for the future. You know, we didn't get the Studio Sessions here either (Eugene, Oregon). They ran the H.O.A.R.D. festival instead. Not that the H.O.A.R.D. festival was bad or anything, it's just that I wanted so badly to see Paula on the Sessions program. I'm hoping that it will air this coming weekend... I agree, but I also think that there is a certain competitiveness between women that is not experiences by men. We compete for mates, and in the modern world, for jobs. When there are only a few opportunities for some, women (and other minorities) will definitely be cut-throat. Tori Amos explored these themes in her album "Under the Pink" and continues to speak about the way women mistreat each other in interviews and to an extent in her more recent work, "Boys for Pele". I'm not saying that men are not competetive or self-sabotaging, but I think that it's a different *kind* of thing. > many times crossroads of action are chosen because of our perception of a > situation , not because the situation is dictating a particular next event. > in a confrontation if we are seeking a peaceful solution we will find one , > if we want to fight we can often find that. what we think of a person will > color how we view thier actions. weather we are comfortable or nervous will > effect how we act. what you need and what drives you is what you will see Good points. I'm a firm believer in karma, so I'm careful about the actions I take against other people, whether negative or positive. I think we're very responsible for what happens to us. Many times we cause our own downfall. "Me" is a great reminder that we are ultimately in control of our lives - no one else. We have to answer to ourselves. What a refreshing thought! :) Take care ya'll. Perhaps it's a lack of recognition that has caused special interest groups to champion certain well-known people. An example of this for me and for many other female bi's is Ani Difranco. She is one of the first women to talk about bisexuality (at least in her lyrics) in modern terms and in a way that a small group, as well as other *human beings*, could understand. She has a way of making taboo things everyday things. (I know I'm not getting this point across very well, but I can't think very well today. ;) My point is that we all need someone to relate to - someone that creates the art we see or hear - and for some, there just isn't that person. I met her a few months ago when she performed at Bogart's here in Cincinnati, Ohio. I walked to the back of the venue, right after the show and she was right down by the bus, signing autographs. I walked down there to catch her signing a poster with a ballpoint pen. So I handed her The Cherished Sharpie (Tori, Evan Dando, and Fiona have also signed with this pen!) and she was just like, "oh thank you!!" So she continued signing and eventually got to me. I told her how much I enjoyed the show and she thanked me. I wanted to mention that I loved her stuff with PG, but just didn't get the chance. I always feel so hurried when I meet someone I adore! :) I gave her a troll doll that someone gave me for good luck and said that I hoped she had a good, safe tour. She thanked me and said it would be the official tour bus mascot. I stuck my hand out to get my Cherished Sharpie back, but she shook my hand instead. Then she realized this, and said "oh, I guess you wanted your pen!". We both laughed and said goodbye. She seemed geniunely nice and so ALIVE! She sets a very important example for me personally. I need to live every moment as completely as I can! :) I also saw her at the free Q102 show here and she rocked the house! I was right in the front, just feet from her (almost as close as the Bogart's show, only a little farther...), and she was so beautiful. At one point, I think during "Me", I think she saw me really getting into it and singing along and smiled at me. I spent the next 10 minutes trying to figure out if she really noticed me or not. ;) Anyway, if you can manage it, meet Paula, 'cause she's awesome! :) :) - -Karen, enough smilies, eh? - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 1997 13:38:58 -0700 From: "Cameron J.
