It was a great day for Oregon weather... mid to upper 70's, sunny and a light breeze. The setting: The Day Amphitheater at the Fairgrounds. When we arrived, the line to get into the festival wrapped around itself many times and then spilled out onto the sidewalk for another 1/3 mile or so (this was at about 3:45 p.m. - 15 minutes before the first act on the second stage). Security had everyone dumping out their sealed water containers before entering, all the while saying "there's free water inside (yeah, one marginally-functional drinking fountain to serve 9,000 people). Paula was the second act on the main stage and her audience's reception was enthusiastic. I have never seen Paula live, so I was really jazzed! Since I forgot to take notes, I'm going from memory here... Her song set was: - Mississippi - Me - Cowboys - Tiger - I Don't Want to Wait The entire set ran about a half-an-hour (much too short) and left most of the audience wanting more. The mix problems observed by folks at the Gorge show was pretty much the same here. I found myself "cupping" my ears toward the speakers so I could hear better. Tiger was awesome, powerful vocals one second then intimate whisper-singing the other. Many in the audience were up and dancing in the aisles (so were we) and the mix seemed a bit clearer on this one song than the other four. Is it just me or does anyone else get those tingly-goosebump-things going when she sings this song? Paula picked up a big drum-stick and began beating the kick bass near the end of the song... amazing energy! "I Don't Want to Wait" was preceded by Paula's introduction of her band mates. The song was beautiful but too hard to here the dynamic range of her voice. This song seems to have the right chemistry to get ample airplay (hooks), yet for those of us who have owned her CD since it's release ... it was great to see/hear her perform it live. All in all, seeing Paula live left me wanting so much more! Hopefully a tour of her own will come through the Pacific Northwest soon. _Zia_, what did you think of the show? I'm bushed, g'nite! I was wondering if anyone was going to the Lillith Fair at the Meadows in Hartford, CT. I figured we could hook up. I also wanted to inquire if anyone had taped the paula cole/ k.d. lang 54th street show. By time I had gotten back home, paula was on her last song. If anyone has taped it, I'd be glad to mail you a tape or whatever. I just wanted to add one more thing that you may already know; Paula is such a great, down-to-earth, modest person. She played at Toad's Place in New Haven a couple months ago. After the concert, she hung around and talked to the fans who waited. She signed all our CDs and talked to us each at length even though she was exhausted from a superb concert. Hope to hear from you!
