[It appears that someone asked Paula why she chose to decline the offer of playing Dorothy in a recent musical stage production of The Wizard Of Oz. - KRC] PaulaCole: I didn't take the part because Toto was being played by a little black boy, and he had to say Arf Arf, and I thought that was really condescending. Jewel ended up playing Dorothy. And I think she did a really good job. desertlady says: Paula what are your spiritual beliefs? PaulaCole: It's so vast. Let's just say that's so vast. I couldn't possibly summarize everything that I feel . I've always been nervous to participate in a man-made religion. I think a lot of "spirituality" is how we practice daily in our life. PaulaCole: I've always thought the greatest inspirations come from teaching. From people's actions, not their words. Nixtress: I wonder how you feel about Major record labels vs. Indies. Have you had to sign your life away to a major to get the kind of exposure you've received? Who owns your publishing, for example? [NO ANSWER - KRC] stevieb says: Do you practice singing? Or do you just do it? What are is your workday like as a musician? PaulaCole: Nearly all my life i've never warmed up before hitting the stage and singing. But now that my life is so rigorous and there's so much demand on my little fleshy pink larynx, i've taken to holding long tones and gently warming up my voice, and it really really helps. When I'm on tour, my life is extremely packed. Often, we have radio station visits or interviews in the morning. Then we travel, sound check, play a show, and do more interviews. It's nonstop, and I have to treat my body very well. Newbie says: Could you describe your ideal environment for writing your music? what makes it JUST perfect for you? PaulaCole: The inspiration for songs comes intermittently and unexpectedly. Sometimes I've literally seen a new song in my head while I was hanging up a shirt in the closet. Sometimes a song has been provoked by a painting at a museum. But when I work at home, I like it to be very quiet. No distracting noise or music. And I like my apartment to be clean. MakKlutz says: First of all Paula, I saw you in Chicago a couple of months ago, and you were wonderful. I wanted to know, how did you get together with Holly Palmer for your spring tour? PaulaCole: Holly Palmer and I used to go to Berkely together, and I met her when we were both aspiring Jazz vocalists. Then she appeared later in my life when somebody handed me her record. My drummer Jay played on a few songs on her record. My engineer Roger Moutenot also engineered her album. So she kept appearing in my life, and it seemed as if the universe was telling me to help her out, so I asked her to join me on tour. We had a lot of things in common. She actually lives right around the corner from me in Manhattan. FatCad67 says: Paula, would you rather be in in elegant older car, a racy newer car, or a motorcycle......or hitchiking??? or stayng home? PaulaCole: I could see the beauty in all of them. I do love the feeling of the wind in my hair on a motorcycle. I don't know how to drive one. Jeanne says: My daughter Alex has a question, too :-) ... she'd like to know what it's like to be in show business, and if you like it! PaulaCole: I love knowing that what I enjoy doing so much is working and is touching people. I think it's very challenging to lose the privacy and it makes me realize how precious anonymity actually is. But I take fame as a spiritual challenge now. I don't like necessarily being famous. I like being a musician, knowing that I can pay the bills now. Nixtress: This is from our BBS. Do you use a PC or a Mac? PaulaCole: I use a Mac Powerbook. DaveJedi says: Do you have performing moments when you would do it for free? Does your talent sometimes seem like a separate thing? PaulaCole: Sometimes it is hard to be nspired every single night, so I have to remind myself to be grateful before I go out on stage. Sometimes even my grouchiness ends up making the show better. Sometimes my frustration at a lackadaisical audience makes the show better, too. I've done so many free shows. I perform because I love music. And I'm sure I'll continue to do free shows in the future. Hopefully I'll perform and give some proceeds to good causes, too. MakKlutz says: Is there anybody who you wish was touring Lilith with you - so you could watch them perform? PaulaCole: I want to see Me"Shell N'dege O'Cello. I wish Annie Lennox were on tour with us, and Tina Turner. james says: Narrow down for us your three favorite songs, either yours or someone else's. PaulaCole: This is too hard. Favorite movies would be easier. Who's Afraid of Viriginia Woolfe. I loved Mike Leigh's movie Secrets and Lies. I loved Babe. The one about the pig. It was my favorite, actually. Oh, and Ghandi. stevieb says: Do you have any advice for young female songwriters? PaulaCole: If you think you want to become a famous singer/songwriter, then you have to really really love music. Have to be willing to endure those terrible dark times when you're considered very unhip and nobody likes you, and still love what you do. I think, especially for women, because it's so easy to be condescended to or dominated by others in this world, that one should learn as much as you possibly can about the language of music so you can express yourself articulately and intelligently. to Musicians, to anybody,. Then you should learn about the recording process, so you can express yourself intelligently in the studio. And lastly, you have to learn about the music business, which is complex and labyrinthian. The hardest things to find are a good manager, a good tour manager, and a drummer. All of those people are so crucial to a career. I think trust your instincts. Have to look into the eyes of that potential manager, and believe that you can trust them. Wholeheartedly. Managers through time have been so corrupt, and they represent you so fully. Therefore you should be able to trust them with your life. Nixtress: Do you know who Ann Wilson is? PaulaCole: She's the lead singer from Heart? Yes. stevieb says: Did you learn anything useful at Berklee? If so, can you summarize this for us to save some young musicians a great deal of time and money? PaulaCole: Berkely for me was a watering hole. I met so many friends and musicians that are with me to this day. I learned more from my fellow students than I did from my teachers. And I learned that by looking for one's own voice, you make the best music. Not necessarily by attempting to replicate other people's styles. But it was a safe place where I could try singing and fuck up but still be ok. And somehow through that process of trying, become a better musician. Nixtress: tell me what led to your song about not being an "A" student anymore. PaulaCole: Oh, Tiger is Bethlehem part two. And if you listen to Bethlehem on Harbinger, then you';ll understand where I'm coming from. Sunflower says: Paula--Have you had dance lessons before? You appear so elegant and graceful? PaulaCole: I've had a few dance lessons. I took some ballet classes in 8th grade and some jazz classes in 8th grade, and recently I took a few bellydancing classes. But I feel I'm still very crude. I still feel I have a lot more finesse to achieve. Doing yoga helps keep me limber. Also, when I was very young, I did gymnastics, and that helped me very on. The value of grace... I just heard Sarah McLachlan's "Building A Mystery" for the first time on The Buzz (105.1 WDBZ). I've been asking the stations to play it for weeks now, but it's only been in the past week or so that they've actually done it. All is forgiven for the moment, though, because I've heard the same station play "I Don't Wanna Wait" twice in the past twenty-four hours! The radio edit is very nice, too. Only thing is, they omit the opening (So open up your morning light....) and they cut out the bridge where Paula sings the stuff about "I don't wanna do what his father, his father, his father did...." It's basically just the first two verses and the chorus. It works, though. Counting the moments until West 54th Sessions begins..... Peace. My first love was Kate Bush, who forever influenced my outlook on music should be. Afterwards, there was Jonatha Brooke (who I actually met Twice) and The Story, Indigo Girls, Happy Rhoades, Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin, and now Paula. I wasn't lucky enough to go out to The Gorge tonight to see Paula live at Lilith Fair (I'm a stone's throw away in Seattle), but I *was* lucky enough to see her on the PBS special. Her performance was so touching, especially "I Don't Want to Wait". I've only seen Paula in the Secret World Live video, so it was a real treat to see another live performance. What really appeals to me about Paula Cole is that her soul and spirit seem just as brilliant and clear as her singing voice. It was awesome to see the interviews in the dressing room.
