Deutsch writes: "Music lovers who have complained that compact discs are too costly were officially vindicated yesterday, as five big music labels and three national retailers settled a lawsuit charging them with price fixing. Although the companies did not admit to any wrongdoing, they agreed to refund $67.4 million to consumers who purchased CDs from 1995 to 2000 and eliminate policies that set minimum prices for advertised CDs." Deutsch adds: "Neither the plaintiffs -- 40 states led by the New York attorney general, Eliot Spitzer -- nor the defendants said that they expected the settlement to result in lower prices for recorded music." The record industry defendants included the Bertelsmann Music Group, EMI Music Distribution, the Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation, Sony Music Entertainment and the Universal Music Group, while "retailer defendants" included Trans World Entertainment, Tower Records and Musicland stores. ------------------------------ End of goths-digest V6 #37 **************************
