(aww.) also, he (sort of) reminds me of the days when you thought you could start a revolution by the way you dress, and when you used to talk all brash, haughty and loud. . . the way i used to two years ago before my spirit was crushed. anyway, here are clips from the interview: - ------------------------- D: For your music, I really cant think of anything else that it sounds like. That may be my own lack of exposure but, what kind of sounds would you say have influenced you? V(oltaire): I think it sounds like . . . um . . . a slightly less gay Ricky Martin from Romania. At the time when I wrote The Devils Bris, my first record, I was listening a lot to Tom Waits, and I was going to see the band Rasputina a lot. They were a local band here in New York; theres three female cellists, who sing and play cellos in turn-of-the-century underwear. I was really excited by the notion of being able to create contemporary music that had an Old World feel to it. Im always kind of stunned by trends, you know? New things come along, and everyone jumps on the bandwagon. There are so many beautiful things from the past that just get discarded, just for the sheer fact that theyre old. So I really wanted to do something along the lines of what Tom Waits was doing, where he creates music that feels like it was written at the turn of the century in Singapore in some drunken port. Hence the drunken gypsy pirate sound of The Devils Bris, and most of the songs being waltzes and tangos. By the time Almost Human came along it was released August last year other influences had crept in, particularly my love of 80s New Wave. So I think its a bouncier record. - -------------------- i just thought it was kind of neat to hear about people out there who are actually doing something creative, and are influenced by rasputina, and getting some sort of exposure. exposure. although he's a little too gothy-goth for me, but s'all good. tom waits. exposure. that's neat. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 01:00:17 -0000 From: "coracao vagabond" Subject: Re: people influenced by rasputina (voltaire) actually, i'm downloading a voltaire track right now. . . so far it really sounds very good! wow. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 18:17:40 -0800 From: Porcy Subject: The Death of Porcy and Melly's website. Hi everyone.. Me and Melly's website has been completely wiped out. I received an email from someone who was having problems getting into it, so I tried, had the same problems. Then I tried to login to tripod, and received this message: "corset_strings is no longer an authorized member of Tripod. This Tripod member has been removed because they violated our Terms of Service." I emailed them to find out exactly what rule we have violated, and am awaiting a response. I am really upset about this, Melly and I put a lot of work into that page. A LOT of time, effort.... and it's gone, just like that. I'm so angry!! I looked at their "terms of service", and I don't think we violated any of them. We don't have porn, our page isn't just for storing files, etc. etc. Someone reported us, and I don't even know why!! I hope to find out why our account was deleted soon. Anyone who has ever made a website, I'm sure you know how much effort and time it takes to do all that stuff... and now we have no Rasputina page! It will take so long to re-make, and now where are we going to store everything? Certainly not tripod, since obviously we did something wrong there. Ugh. I am so mad. Porcy, who is mourning the loss of her page. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 22:28:46 EST From: KrodKnid@aol.com Subject: Re: people influenced by rasputina (voltaire) In a message dated 3/16/2001 7:38:27 PM Eastern Standard Time, burgundy_wine@hotmail.com writes: > while searching for porcy and melly's website (which i can't seem to find > anymore) i came across this guy who calls himself "voltaire", a > musician/stop-motion animator who's apparently influenced by rasputina. > he's this goth (quelle surprise) boy from new (quelle surprise) york, and, > reading an interview, he comes across as one of those sit-in-the-dark wine > sippers, who you know used to doodle cute little skeletons and > blood-thirsty > bats in the margins of fullscap paper as an adolescent boy. Check out "Dead Girls" and >"When You're Evil" some time:-) > will do. danke. ;) actually, "when you're evil" is the track i just downloaded. ^_- i really get the impression that the rasputina aesthetic, and particularly melora's sense of humour, opened him up to good ideas when he got started. that is so cool! _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 04:06:09 -0000 From: "coracao vagabond" Subject: Re: The Death of Porcy and Melly's website. hi porcy and melly, i would just like to say that it sucks that they pulled down your site. you could really tell how much time you put into it. and i mean, you could REALLY tell. i visited your website so much, especially times like these when my life is pathetic and the internet is the most immediate form of denial. so, out of respect, i'll hate tripod for you. you really had a great site, and i look forward to your next one, though i don't envy the amount of work you guys are going to have to go through. again. hugs!! ;/ >From: Porcy >To: "coracao vagabond" >CC: goths@smoe.org >Subject: The Death of Porcy and Melly's website. >Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 18:17:40 -0800 > >Hi everyone.. > >Me and Melly's website has been completely wiped out. I'm so angry!! i'm sorry. :| i know how much effort a page such as yer's requires. didn't you guys have back-up files? > Porcy, who is mourning the loss of her page. one suggestion - check yer temp files. they should be there (provided you've visited the page in the last approx. 30 days). everyone else who's been to the page can do this, too. i just checked mine and i have one i know was from yer page, titled "raspy.htm". - - allison ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 06:13:06 -0000 From: "L'Ophenya Mae" Subject: Re: people influenced by rasputina (voltaire) omigod, voltaire is amazing!!! i saw him at the october Dracula's Ball in philly ( www.draculasball.com ...support my friend Patrick Ferret!), he is the coolest goth i ever met AND he has a sense of humor...he is the only artist i know that can have a group of goth kids swaying melodramatically to one string-laden, haunting track like 'feathery wings' or 'the last word', and a few minutes later have them bouncing up and down like 5 year olds to a perky spanish ditty such as 'el barquito (sin mosquito) de nuez'. BUY HIS ALBUM (especially Almost Human), READ HIS COMIC (Oh My Goth). he is a funny, beautiful man, and my girlfriend and i are both enamored with him. :) can you tell i'm a fan, perhaps?? back to lurking, ~~Lori _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of goths-digest V5 #12 **************************
