[Nahalie] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 08:15:15 -0700 (PDT) From: Tracy Subject: The history of "GOTHIC" (non Rasp.) A little information learned in Art History and Period Styles classes: Gothic was a term coined in the 19th century to describe the architecture of the middle ages. The classy folk of the early 1800's thought that it was a crude and barbaric form of architecture, and the term "gothic" was considered an insult at the time. Ironically for them, their decendents in the late Victorian period took a number of Gothic elements and mixed them into their architecture. (Thus, we get the tall, narrow houses with the towers from that time.) Eventually, the term "Gothic" stuck and was used to generalize the clothing and literature of that time period, as well as the architecture. Since modern "Goth" style doesn't derive from the 1200's and 1300's, but instead from a mixture of periods, I don't know how that name came to describe the black clad, dark, poetic brood of today. An interesting point is that true gothic style was extremely colorful, with bright reds and blues being the colors of choice. Just thought that was interesting and pertained to the topic quite well.
