It does not take a genius to understand that some of the most successful and influential bands _ever_ have been groups that did not impact with a huge bang and fireworks, but rather, quietly, slipped theu the back door, doing their own thing until the business-and, more important-the _people_ caught up with them. Despite what some may think, acts like Bob Marley, Beck, and Nirvana were far from overnight success. Enter Rasputina. At first, one may not really be quite sure of what to make of this unique trio of women cellists who preform a mix of classical, pop, and punk with gothic undertones while clothed in antique corsets. But with the release of their second Columbia/CRG full length, the Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails)-produced _How We Quit The Forest_, the band is beginning to catch the attention of everyone from black-clad teenage goth kids to college professors. To call them groundbreaking would not be far off. They have toured jointly with Helmet and Marilyn Manson and worked the crowds at Kula Shaker and Bob Mould. Ultimately, there is no limit to who this band can appeal to. And while they have spent the past few years gaining the respect and admiration of serious music aficionados, radio has been rather skeptical about them from the start-as they were with the Police and U2. Says Danny Bennett of New York based RPM Music Productions, Inc., who not only manages Rasputina, but also Tony Bennett, Elvis Costello, and the Candy Buthers, "Melora Creager, the wrtier and visionary of the band, prefers to push the envelop. She feels that rock & roll does not always have to be defined by guitars, bass & drums. Her lyrics are extremely intelligent and very literate, and when you combine that with good music, it transcends the norm, eventually setting the standard for the future." "I love the cello, because you can express a lot of emotions through playing it," says Melora. "I've noticed audience members have a very strong, personal and emotional response to the cello. It can be a very powerful experience ifyou allow it to be. Because we've opened for so many different bands, audience members are always caught off guard. Playing to people that have no idea what we do is what we do best. Usually we win them over, and that's a pretty nice feeling...It also makes people who watch us feel special. They connect and understand." - ------- go to part #2 now ----------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 22:33:21 -0500 (EST) From: riley Subject: article/olde headboard 12" #2 Bennett acknowledges that Rasputina is not an automatic sell for radio, but his absolute belief in their future success allows him to take the time needed to build the Rasputina story. There's no need to rush, he says. This is, after all, an _artist development_ story. "I'm not the type of manager that is interested in an easy sell,' he says. "I'm hoping there's a lot of other people out there that feel excitment about pushing the envelope, breaking new acts, opening up the way, and investing in out own future. Rasputina can make it exciting for the listener, and isn't that why people tune into radio stations in the first place? Stations are looking for a record that reacts, and we have found Rasputina to react _very_ strongly when given the chance." _How We Quit the Forest_ is the subject of an extensive street marketing campaign. A Marilyn Manaon-produced remix that was released between albums has struck a chord with Manson fans, leading to online conversations about Rasputina on Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson Web sites. In addition, samplers and promotional Rasputina necklaces were distributed at select Lilith Fair dated and at Hot Topics, an unusual mall chain that features clothing, jewelry, and music aimed at the oh-so-dark (and highly devoted) suburban goth fans. There is definatly something brewing with this band, a fact that shouldn't really surprise most listeners. Now it's just a question of whether or not any suits will climb on board before the bandwagon arrives. Who will lead the way at commercial radio? Only time will tell... _______________________________________________ i thought that was a pretty good article to attract music directors at radio stations... maybe we will start hearing them on the radio.. the station my dad works at [WFHB] has Rasputina on their "top 40", if you were wondering. its not a typical top 40 like you imagine when you hear "top 40", though. others on it are: willie nelson, elliott smith, keb' mo', lisa germano, beastie boys, hooverphonic, happy rhodes, firesign theatre, cracker, ani difranco, 7% solution, lyle lovett, juliana hatfeild, and lots more you probably haven't heard of. this was on october 5, though. the oct. 19th top 40 list doesn't list rasputina anymore, but they are still played a lot. they just have to be played massive amounts to make it on there. on WFHB people choose what they play, its not programmed in like on many [well, most] other radio stations. so, people are choosing to play raspy. woohooo~ free form, man.. free form. - ----------- go to part #3 now ------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 22:35:02 -0500 (EST) From: riley Subject: article/olde headboard 12" #3 ____________________________ my dad also got the olde headboard 12" in, and i got to listen to it. someone posted before the record came out about how easy the lyrics are to understand on this, and they are! there are 4 different mixes, along with the album version. they are: 1.
