There's even a cool pic of the ladeez!! Here tis: Rasputina- "How We Quit The Forest" (Columbia) - ---------------------------------------------- The tray card of Rasputina's "How We Quit The Forest" contains a snapshot of these sunlight-averse women bereft of the Goth trappings they don for performances. Apparently, they don't spend every waking hour in bodices and black lipstick. As you might guess, this is no featherweight, ethereal string trio. "Leechwife" announces the Rasputina manifesto with the hallowed riff of "Crazy Train", played, naturally, on three cellos. Rasputina combines the instrumental format of "Eleanor Rigby" and the sculpted fury of Metallica, while vocalist Melora Creager finishes almost every phrase with a choked quaver. These ladies of Goth persuasions may be morose, but goddamn if "How We Quit The Forest" doesn't prove that da Rasp knows how to make a venerable string instrument exult in distortion! A good half of "How..." is contemplative in song structure. The delicate "Rose K" portrays the Kennedy matron during her slow and steady decline on the beach in Hyannis, "You Don't Own Me" is given the pizzicato treatment, and "Dwarf Star" parodies the bleeps and gurgles of current electronic music. But Rasputina's innovation is the severe metal of amplified string instruments, which is at its best on "Trenchmouth", a tremendous epic of backwoods intrigue, and "The Olde HeadBoard", which employs a funky beat and wah-wahed strings in the service of sending a boyfriend on his way. Notably, Rasputina doesn't think much of marriage. You can get the idea with "Leechwife", but "Diamond Mind" is unprecedented. While cellos saw away on a variation of Rossini's signature theme from "The Barber Of Seville", Creager assumes the guise of (and mocks) women seeking marriage at all costs, and does so in a stone Long Island JAP accent: "I want that diamond/I want it so/All of my irritating friends will know/That I have worth, not only that/But that you love me even though I'm fat." They are both the same, and they look really cool. They fold in half - the front 'cover' is black, with the phrase "featuring The Olde HeadBoard" - on the left of the middle is an enlarged shot of the cover of HWQTF, and on the right is a color photo of the band with their cellos (Melora's got really funky hair in this one - oh, and it also appears that Julia has a tattoo of a star on her left upper arm, if anyone is interested). The back 'cover' shows the band again, this time in black and white. I would scan this, but it's probably one foot by one foot when folded up. I asked the clerk if there were others, but I guess I got the only two. :( Sorry. I was gonna try to get my hands on a lot to mail out to all who wanted them.....All I can recommend is that you ask your local record store and hopefully you might find extras.
