Like Auschwitz, it was also one of the sites of some pretty horrible experiments on humans. The song suggests that the "Herb Girls" are escaped experiment victims... I don't know whether or not it refers to a specific sighting/incident, since I've never heard of "The Herb Girls of Birkenau." Then again, I'm not exactly a WWII/ Extermination Camp/ Nazi experimentation expert. I will be taking an honors Holocaust course at school this fall, so that may shed some light on the subject. In the meantime, does anyone have anymore info about this? The events described in the song could just be made up, but we all know how Melora likes to write lyrics based on true events... A web search for "Birkenau" yields general information about the death camp and death camps in general, but not quite so specific. A web search for "Herb Girls of Birkenau" yields nothing. that's all Love, Jason †•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••† † m o r p h e u s @ t i r . c o m † † http://www.tir.com/~morpheus/ † †•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••† † and i will kill her children with death † † -Jesus Christ, Rev. 2:23 † †•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••† ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 09:40:10 PDT From: "little liza jane" Subject: herb girls Actually, I think the song is fairly blatantly about 'medical experiment' victims in the Nazi concentration camps of world war II and the indifference of the Germans to their plight. If you were raised Jewish you've probably heard all the stories a thousand times. They're still creepy and frighteningly relevant. It's a beautiful song. Just like the rest of the album. I am still blown away. little liza jane 'and in the mirror is a fire and in the fire is a face and in the mirror is a fire until all the combinations are exhausted and nothing is left but a prayer for strength' - -Norman Finkelstein ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 20:03:57 EDT From: foxmulder@juno.com (Chris L Smith) Subject: Re: lyrics On Thu, 13 Aug 1998 20:24:11 EDT NINMANSON1@aol.com writes: >Does anyone know a page with the lyrics for the new album? I have just joined this mailing list and just wanted to introduce myself....sorry if this is not completely Rasputina related, or if you don't care for reading it. I just recently got into the band after a friend mentioned them. They quickly became one of my favorites! I can't wait until they go on tour so I can see them live.....btw, I doubt it, but is anyone else on this list from or near RI? Not that many Rasputina fans out here.....Also, on Transylvanian Regurgitations, Norm Block is listed as playing drums. I was very surprised to see this, as I am a big Plexi fan as well (norm is the plexi drummer). Any other Plexi fans out there? thats all for now I guess......~kate ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 20:29:18 EDT From: Verlore@aol.com Subject: Re: hello > Also, on Transylvanian Regurgitations, Norm Block is listed as > playing drums. Any other Plexi fans out there? my curiousity is piqued. i have seen several Plexi cds in the used bin at my local record store (oddly [not so oddly?] named "The Record Store") and have been itching to buy one for the longest time. however, i've had baaad experiences buying things on the basis of dirt cheap prices and alluring packaging. but........umm, i was going to say if one of their members has worked with The Girls his band can't be too bad *but* then i recalled who *else* has collaborated with them ...and thus i unleash a barrage of questions: who are they? what do they sound like? should I pick something up? - -jen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 20:35:44 EDT From: SadSpider@aol.com Subject: Re: hello You should definitely check them out! They are 3 boys from LA, hard to describe their music. I'm not one for labels much anyway....I guess you really have to listen to them. Okay. First off. I apologize for the attention getter. Secondly. There were a few emotions I felt the first time I heard Leechwife. The first was anger. The second . . . apathy. When I joined this list, I thought we were all /music/ lovers. Leechwife is so very pale and anorexic compared to Shirtwaist Fire. It's more of a club song. I love Rasputina for the haunting cello melodies, not the raucus Mansonite influence, which is ALL Leechwife is. I hate to say it, but I almost took the cd back after I heard the first three tracks. If you want witty lyrics, read poetry. Track four changed my opinion, though. It was a very nice blend of electronika and the cellos, made me keep listening to the cd. Track five was neat, as was Dwarfstar. One of their better nonsense tracks :> And then there's Signs of the Zodiac . . . it's haunting, but with a VERY nice back beat. It's wonderful. It's music. I can just listen to her voice and not care about the words. Extremely melodic. The way it starts out is very . . . medieval and almost celtic. Then the electronics kick in. Gives it a quasi-industrial backbeat. And the lyrics . . . beautiful sounds without listening to the words. Then you listen to the words. Hauntingly beautiful, Rasputina's trademark. I just can't say enough about it. It puts me to sleep, but also raises chill bumps. The harmonics are amazing . . . The rest of the cd is pretty good, too. I felt it was neat that they managed to play to two different groups. BUT! In my opinion . . . they came VERY close to becoming the Spice Girls of subculture. Many of the songs lack the musical and lyrical content I love about Rasputina. -Michael ------------------------------ End of goths-digest V2 #112 ***************************
