[was:Re:a new topic suggestion] Date: 97-12-08 12:26:07 EST From: Nahaliel To: goths@smoe.org << How about this for a new topic: seeing as this is the end of the year, what are everyone's favorite albums of the year? >> *groan*...oh lord..i always list too many albums/songs..i can never decide my absolute favorites..and the thing is, is that my most-favorites are usually new discoveries rather than brand spanking new releases..but since you asked and all...besides, you all are a captive audience..delete me or listen kids [hey, you might learn something].. ;) ..here goes... Favorite Albums I Picked Up Somewhere Along The Way -- *Belle and Sebastian -- If You're Feeling Sinister absolutely _wonderful_ indiepop..guaranteed to have you bopping in your car when you _think_ no one's looking.. *Low -- I Could Live in Hope heartbreakingly sad, beautiful and sparse, the epitome of slowcore..their first album,i've been searching for it for years and i think i literally squealed when i got my paws on it. honest. *There and Back Again Lane (Sarah 100 comp.) more gorgeous indiepop..from the legendary Sarah label..The Sweetest Ache,Secret Shine,Heavenly,The Orchids,Brighter,The Sea Urchins..it goes on and on..truly a comp for all moods, extremes preferred..rest assured,if you're bipolar you'll love it.. *the Changelings -- self titled picked this up from their friendly vendor person at Danse Macabre this past Labor Day..and i fell in love during soundcheck..Regeana has a lovely voice..it gives you the most delicious chills up and down your spine..they also hold the honor of being the only band i love ten times more live than recorded..you can't capture that kind of energy and presence on tape.. *The Marilyn Decade -- self titled mostly instrumental, beautifully wrought, gently atmospheric guitar sounds.. Favoritest Songs, Which Are Basically From Mixes Because I Am Too Poor To Buy New Music As Much As I'd Like -- *Red House Painters -- Medicine Bottle yeah yeah,it's old,i know..but my friend recently put it on a mix for me and i cried and cried...without a doubt the most lyrically intelligent and poignant song ever written..i could just as well put the entire RHP repertoire down, but mmmm i won't subject you to that..but here's a few more (i can't help it) -- Katy Song, Have You Forgotten, Mistress, Shadows, Trailways..*sob*.. *Elvis Costello -- What Do I do Now? of all things,a cover of a Sleeper song..i loathe Sleeper...but when Elvis' voice breaks with emotion ("what do i do now?/are we going under?/what did i do wrong?/i thought we had it sorted/out the other day/maybe i'm just stupid...") my heart just cracks in two..highly recommended for the ever popular post breakup lovesong misery fest... *Low -- Do You Know How To Waltz? a lengthy, ethereal, indescribably hypnotic wall of sound, complete with reverb, feedback and probably every other fancy thing you could imagine.."one more dance...before they take away the light.." Favorite Shows Of The Year,None Of Which I Actually Paid To Get Into Now That I Think About It -- *dead leaves rising at Alchemy,June 97 -- the first time i got to see an actual show of his..heartrending music set forth in the purest form i've ever heard..encompassing intricate emotional extremes,it goes from quiet to crashing..a quiet, exquisite pain and delicate melodies melt together, soothing and yet unnerving the listener..i'm recovering all the time.. *Geneva at Loeb Auditorium,NYU, Oct. (?) 97 -- okay,so the headliners were Catherine Wheel, but Geneva definitely stole the show..the singer's voice (forgive me,his name escapes me) was incredible -- think Tim and Jeff Buckley, only,um,still alive..better yet, think along the lines of a choirboy possessed...wonderfully woven songs, catchy and fun..my heroes!.. hmm..that wasn't too bad...not too lengthy, in my humble opinion.. ;) - - jenniferkate! Andrew Montgomery is the singer's name, and I agree that this show was very good, and my ticket was 2 dollars for a 4 hour show. I could have done without the 20 min. version of *Black Metallic* though. :) I particularly liked Feline too. I was right in front of the stage for the entire show. exeunt. robert.. http://deathsdoor.com/candlesdie "To the person in the bell jar, blank and stopped as a dead baby, the world itself is the bad dream."
