Hurwitz" Subject: Last Night at Johnny D's Hey folks! I'm crossposting because I know a number of passengers may not be on Jenny's list. For those of you that are, you get to read (or delete) this twice! You must be so thrilled at the prospect! ;) Anyway, Justin, Tracy, Albert, Leanne, Mary, Steph and I all went to see Jenny perform last night at Johnny D's. It wound up being a shared stage with each of four artists playing in turn. This was great for introducing us to two wonderful performers, Christopher Williams and Kris Delmhorst, and well, the other chick had a few amusing songs. I tried to be attentive, but her lyrics just didn't travel too deep. IMPO her first song was her best. *shrug* I didn't get the CD. I did however walk away with way too many CDs for my wallet, but just the right number for my conscience. No kicking myself this time... Jenny's set: (Steph please fill in, I can't remember the names of all of them.) 1 Universe 2 Lucky Penny with Christopher Williams hopping in on a small djembe (I know it has another name...) 3 4 5 Ruby 6 7 Human Condition -- the version whose lyrics are on the web page rather than what's on the CD Sorry, it was a late night and these are the ones that I know fairly well. She couldn't play a number of songs off of the CD because she was pianoless. Hopefully Steph can remember the rest...or any of the others. This was Jenny's first show in seven years without Bernard and it was a bit weird for her, but she got through it very well. Can't wait for the LRC! As for the other artists: Christopher Williams blew me away. WOW! He had this one song with cleansing the soul in a river that I loved. I tend to like those ones. ;) He also had a cool one about his grandfather and...well I could babble a great deal more, but I need to listen to the CDs to figure out the names and such. If you like Ellis Paul and Todd Thibaud you might like Christopher, but he definately has his own style. I even made this observation before he whipped out the harmonica. I need to get to the CDs sometime soon... Kris Delmhorst absolutely rocked. She was actually telling us the titles so I can say that I adored Weatherman, World Gives You Wings, North Dakota, Moscow Song, and Open Road. She had two others that were great as well! As for who she might remind me of, some of her vocal style reminds me of Dar Williams. Also a bit of Ani. Though again, Kris is definately her own artist. I've actually cracked open her CD, and noticed that she had Patty Larkin, Jennifer Kimball, Catie Curtis, and Joe Kessler recording with her on various songs. Way cool. I love the CD. Hello all... the gig last night was amazing, to say the least. It's really good to see Jenny branching out from the NYC scene...I know she has a few gigs coming up in the MA area (east, central, west...) and some out in Pennsylvania... ...please do check www.goodgirl.com under the "gigs" link for more information (including basic information on the LRC at my place...) ANYWAY, to fill in the blanks for Laurie as to Jenny's set list...here is the order... 1. Universe 2. Lucky Penny 3. Soul on Fire 4. Blue Angel 5. Ruby 6. Running 7. Human Condition she only had her guitar with her, so the set-list was limited to sons Jenny doesn't do on piano (her self-admitted first "love" insofar as musical instruments goes...)...so there was no chance of "Music to My Ears," "Come Closer," "Green and Gold," "New York City Valentine," "Good Girl," "Fairy Tale," and a bunch of other awesome songs... And she was unable to do "Spin," as she needs her guitarist Steve Quinn (an amazing guitarist...truly amazing...) there for this song... ...but her new songs are amazing. Truly amazing! I can say, right now, if I could possibly choose an "ideal" next Jenny CD, I wold love to see the following songs considered: Soul on Fire Lucky Penny Spin Blue Angel Happy Song Come Closer Devil and the Deep Blue Sea Universe New York City Valentine ...and I would LOVE to see, as a "bonus track" on the CD, a recording of her "old" version of "Human COndition" as she had altered it severely into an unrecognizable form (good form nonetheless, but WAY different from the original...) into the little rappy-ditty that became the last song on he rCD. Jenny Fans/CD Owners: have you gone to amazon.com ??? Jenny's CD is now for sale through there as well as through other channels, and I know she would totally love it if you could take a minute, go to amazon.com, and write up your own quick little review of her album. And tell your friends to check her out! They can all hear sound samples of he rstuff on either amazon.com or on her own website! Cool, eh? Jenny Listers: I am having a Living Room Concert on Sunday, March 21 at 4 PM featuring Jenny Bruce and another cool singer, Jessica Weiser. (trust me, you'd all like her...). PLEASE email me privately for more information... ...and let's make a little noise. :) this list has been really mouse-quiet...though i know that my own busy-ness between work/looking for job/school/concentrating on writing has contributed to the quietness... many thanks and tons of love, Stephanie * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos * The Greek Poet Chyck kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu This is my prayer for you: May the moon protect you with honesty, caring, and gentility.
