Gorka on Mountain Stage with the Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars African musicians have long had the uncanny ability to translate the worst possible human conditions into some of the most beautiful and peaceful music on the planet - which is exactly what this disparate group of musicians who met a refugee camp in Guinea have done. The group was "discovered" by filmmakers making the 2002 documentary "The Refugee All Stars." Since then, the group, led by Reuben Koroma, has returned to Sierra Leone to record its debut, played festivals around the world and has had its music featured in the new Leonardo DiCaprio film "Blood Diamonds."The acoustic, reggae-styled opening/title cut, "Living Like a Refugee," was recorded live at the refugee camp and has the gentle, upbeat feel of a group sitting around a campfire. Save for the closer, "Ma Fo Ya," also recorded at the refugee camp, the disc's 15 tracks feature the full band's strong rhythms and buoyant, ebullient flow. With members ranging in age from 19 to 49, the music sashays between African, reggae, Caribbean and dub grooves with lyrical themes that aim to ferret out the best of humanity -- even when singing about the most elemental things like hunger and the fight for survival. The result is certainly one of the most hauntingly beautiful records of the year. Catch the Refugee All Stars on this Sunday's "Mountain Stage" along with Greg Brown, Alejandro Escovedo, John Gorka, Jess Klein and Sasha Dobson. www.www.anti.com http://www.mountainstage.org/ FYI music junkies.
