John came out on the stage wearing a black jacket, blue t-shirt, black pants and black shoes with red laces. During the first set he was sweltering, or must have been, since he mopped his brow frequently. I wished he would take off the jacket and was relieved when he appeared for the second set wearing a red t-shirt and *no* jacket. He looks really good in red; he ought to wear that color more often. At one point during the first set, he asked for requests. I yelled out "Oh Abraham". There were other requests and he sang most of them. He apologized for not singing one request (I can't remember which song), saying in a wry way that he couldn't remember the lyrics. Set list: What Was That Dogs & Thunder I'm From New Jersey Flying Red Horse [Sent out to Margie. While waiting in line to get into the venue, a man said he would be requesting "Flying Red Horse" for his female companion who would be undergoing open heart surgery - not her first - soon. I wore my Flying Red Horse shirt (thanks Steve!) and was asked if it was just a coincidence.] I Saw A Stranger With Your Hair Let Them In (accompanied by piano) Mean Streak Branching Out Blue Chalk Morningside John said we might need a break after he sang the next song. He then defined "scrapple" as Spam without the health benefits. People My Age BREAK Silence (Sorry you weren't there to hear it, Steve) Winter Cows Where The Bottles Break Oh Abraham (The first time he sang the line "If they would only do what's right", he added: "Not far right". He changed "All moneyed up and charmed with might" to "All powered up and charmed with might".) Love Is Our Cross To Bear The Blues Palace Old Futures Gone Quipped that only four of the songs he has written are happy songs. Said that the following is a jaunty song of sorrow: Always Night Is A Woman A Little Bit Of Rain (written by Fred Neil; accompanied by piano) JG then said "I know I don't have to urge you to vote because coming to a concert is harder. I hope your vote counts, too." He then said that a sing-along is "Kumbayalogy" and that he would do his best Pete Seeger sing-along imitation while singing the next song: People Get Ready (written by Curtis Mayfield) Encore: Soldier After All After the concert I thanked him for singing Old Futures Gone. (He agreed with me that "Old Futures Gone" is the reality of today.) I also thanked him for singing "Oh Abraham" and "Soldier After All" and indicated that they had inspired me to help campaign in the upcoming election. He always seems to do just the right mix of old and new, where some artists tend to focus only on the new. I regret that I have yet to replace some of my JG cassettes with CDs, but after hearing some of these songs again I think I'll move that to the top of my priority list! :-) SMOKEY Angel of the lighthouse, bring me home to shore My sails they are too tattered to hold the wind any more.
