John was perfroming as part of the Wisconsin Singer Songwriter Series in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. This is one of my favorite series and favorite venues. He was in good spirits, really amusing himself (said he was soon to open a self-amusement park) and in good voice. I shared this concert with a group of friends and saw other music junkies I had not seen in a long while which is always good, connecting with like-minded music souls. John's show was fresh. I expected him to open with I'm From New Jersey, which is has done at most every show I have ever seen but instead it was When The Ice Goes Out, first time hearing that live. That set the stage for the evening. In no particular order played: Mill Town (said he needs to come up with the Chinese version of that song) Let Them In Night is a Woman Houses In The Fields Old Future's Gone Always Riverside (with guitar workshop explaining capos and chords to a guy who came all the way from NYC for the show) Solider After All Raven in the Storm Love is Our Cross to Bear Stranger With Your Hair Mean Streak Where The Bottle Breaks Part Of Your Own Blue Chalk If I Could Forget To Breath Oh Abraham People My Age (no eye contact made during this song) It was a wonderful concert and I loved that he mixed it up between old stuff and new stuff. I get to hear him again tonight. Highlight of this show was the opening act, also from Minnesota, Justin Roth. Beautiful fingerstyle guitar work with both instrumental and vocals. Funny and self depricating, much like John's humor. It was a good match. I talked to John briefly after the show and requested Italian Girls for tonight. We'll see if he has time to learn it. Hearing John last night was one of those shows that reminded me why I love folk music and why John's music is so important in my life. Here's hoping all is turning well in your worlds. It's funny that you have usually seen him open with "I'm from NJ" most times, because I don't recall him doing that. Maybe when he comes out west, he's in a different mindset. The first words we tend to hear these days are, "Sometimes I'm an idiot..." Talk about your opening lines!
