He's older (I can say this, because he's three months older than me, ahem), more weary, and more jaded--which I see as quite different from young, heartbroken and bitter, and oh yeah, angry. I would even say there's more fear and resignation expressed in this collection. Which is never to say, however, that John is without hope for the world at large. So now you know how confused I am. I've listened to this one something like three or four times, and to be honest, initially it struck me as a huge leap into different territory, and not necessarily one I could make with John--not because I don't like it, but in some ways because I'd just as soon "look the other way." But now it's settling well into my bones, and I may have to declare "Old Futures Gone" John's deepest and most resonant work. I think the reality is that I'm uncomfortable on some levels because John is so adept at reminding me that time is passing in my own life. sigh.
