My pleausre Mr. Votel! John Gorka at Great Waters Folk Festival, Wolfeboro, NH, Aug. 2, 2003 Reviewed by Jay Votel (jay.votel@verizon.net) This was a very short set. 1. I'm From New Jersey 2. I Saw A Stanger With Your Hair 3. Let Them In (on piano) 4. Mean Streak 5. Part of Your Own 6. People My Age 7. Where the Bottles Break Most of the artists got to perform five songs, but you know how that goes. The Waybacks, for instance, played a five-song set and then did an encore that was half again as long as their set. They were wonderfully entertaining, though. Lui Collins took the "five-song rule" to heart, as she would. She performed three songs and recited one poem with two parts. This is a wonderful festival under a tent, in its second year this year, and it had a stellar two-day line-up: JG, Arlo Guthrie, Natalie MacMaster, Lucy Kaplasky, Richard Shindell, The Waybacks, Bill Staines, Bill Morrissey, Slaid Cleaves, Mark Erelli, Lui Collins and David Francey. Jeff Davis and Don Osborne were MCs and also performed at workshops. There were workshop stages in the surrounding town and a free venue at the town bandstand at lakeside. We didn't get to see JG in his workshop performance, but as a treat after the show Saturday night, the hard core folkies and festival volunteers gathered at a local watering hole. Lui Collins, JG and David Francey, Don Olson, and the fiddle player from the Waybacks whose name escapes me, played with some of the local guys who brought guitars and mandolins. Folks kept up rhythm on beer cups and buckets. One guy even brought a djembe, so ... you get the picture. Canadian guitarist David Clark led the crowd in his wonderful song "That's How Summer Slips Away." You should have seen the smile on JG's face as he was singing along on that one. John led the group in "People Get Ready" and "Good Noise." The party was still going strong when we left at 1:45 a.m. This is one of the very best festivals we have attended and we recommend it highly. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 17:51:28 -0700 From: "Gina" Subject: Re: Review of Gorka in New Hampshire Wow! It sounds like a truly amazing time. The shows are always good, but the spontaneous fun after the show is priceless. Thanks for the review.
