This is a lovely outdoor venue, where everyone brings beach chairs or towels and sprawls on a huge lawn in front of a gazebo with theater lighting and sound. Kids and dogs abound, most folks bring a picnic and everyone is mellow. The evening was warm but not unbearably so. We arrived early, during the soundcheck. John was playing "You Don't Know Me" and "Shenandoah" on the piano, warming up. I hoped that meant they would be in the show, but not this time. The Strings of Prussia, a local Bluegrass group, opened for John, and did a fine job. John elected to play a short set, then take a break and resume. His reasoning was that he needed rehearsal time for requests he needed to practice. What he actually did was sign CD's and pose for pictures, a fact I failed to recognize until it was too late to partake. Although I own all his CD's, I would gladly have bought more just to be able to say hello. (Sigh.) Well, the concept worked very well in that he sold out all the CD's he brought with him. :) I didn't keep a set list (sorry), I just get into enjoying the music. He opened with Silence, then went into I'm From New Jersey and Blue Chalk, a request. In fact, requests were the focus of the evening. He played as many as he could, and even entertained the idea of performing "Stranger in My Driver's Seat," which I have not heard him play in years. I know he had a self imposed moratorium on some songs he considered negative, and it is good to know we may have a chance to hear some of these again. (He ended up not playing the song because he hadn't brought the lyrics.) Houses in the Fields, Down in the Milltown, and Let Them In were performed on piano. While playing Good Noise on guitar, he broke a string, and joked that he went from "six to five string" during the song. Since he only brought one guitar, he had to change the string on stage, and used the wrong string. He joked that there would be "extra bass" in the songs. No one minded. John was in great voice, and seemed to be having a wonderful time, very relaxed. The audience was very receptive and very into his music. The closing song was a sing-a-long version of People Get Ready; the encore Semper Fi. Dedicated to his father, John talked a little about his dad's life, some information I had not heard before. What a beautiful, memorable evening! I can't wait for the new CD in September. Hope you get to see John soon, wherever you are.
