I've seen him several times over the years and am amazed at how he just keeps getting better. I hope the new album demonstrates this trend. The venue was in Santa Barbara at a place called Soho. The problem with this venue is that it is a restaurant and there is background noise - like dishes being washed, people greeting one another etc. They have no doors on the kitchen and it's a real weak spot in the place. But, other than that, it's quite nice. At one point, when we all heard the cappuccino machine going, John said, "They are torturing the milk." He had an opening act called Anastasia and John and he joined them on one of the songs. John wore his trademark black shoes with long red laces. John was the most animated and spontaneous than I'd ever seen him. He laughed out loud several times. He spoke about the general chaos of his shows, as he usually does, but he said that he used to be rigid. There was something about the way he said it that set off the collective dirty mind of the audience. It didn't seem like he expected for that comment to go that way, but who knows? He took mental requests, as usual. He was moving his capo all around, silently deciding what song to do next and I said, "Not that one." So he didn't do that one. Here is the set list: 1. Shape of the World 2. I'm from New Jersey 3. Stranger with Your Hair 4. Let Them In (on piano) 5. Baby Blues - after which someone said, "You do blues, do you do country too?" John rambled on a bit about this and I can't remember exactly what he said, but it ended up with, "There is good country music, but you won't be hearing any of it from me." 6. Blue Chalk Intermission 7. Land of the Bottom Line 8. He then told us that during the break he rehearsed a country song that he had never recorded, with good reason, he thought. I don't know what the official title of this song is. It must be something like "The Pilot Light is Out in the Oven of Our Love." It was very clever and funny - using kitchen, cooking and appetite metaphors and word play to describe a failing relationship. 9. Oh Abraham 10. Wisheries 11. That's Why 12. Lightning's Blues 13. Night is a Woman (on piano) 14. When He Cries 15. Italian Girls 16. Branching Out The encore numbers were: 17. What Was That? 18. Semper Fi If I had to sum up last night in one word, the word would be "delightful." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 20:53:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Kevin Rent Subject: Re: Gorka in Santa Barbara Thank you Gina for the great post!
