I am singing it every day. He intros it as a work in progress, as is he. He says he had begun reading the sermons and speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King because, at first, he thought it would be good for him. He discovered that he enjoyed them and that the language was something he wanted to keep close. So he put some of the language into this song to give him a reason to say some of the words over and over. It comes from the idea that just because peace follows war, does not mean that war causes peace..the end of violence, the end of fighting leaves in it's wake only bitterness and desolation, not peace. Powerful words from Mr. Gorka. The complete lyrics to War Makes War War makes war It won't bring peace It just makes more, without cease. Peace is caused by justice. Peace is caused by trust. The strength to stop the red red wheel. To make it lock at rust. To make lock and rust. War makes war, It won't bring peace. We can learn from everyone How to, or not to be. We can learn the most from those who think differently. Who think differently. War makes war It won't bring peace. It just makes more, without cease. From the book of Amos The words went into the dream. Let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream. Righteousness like a mighty stream. I do believe there's hope for all If love is where our trust is. The arch of the moral universe is long but It bends towards justice. But it bends towards justice. War makes war, it won't bring peace. It just makes more, without cease. War makes war, makes war, makes war, makes war, makes warb& Peace, P Bryn, saying the words over and over ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 11:28:28 -0600 From: "Sara Chamberlin" Subject: Re: The Arch of the Moral Universe Hey everyone-- Feeling at a loss this morning, I went to the website Poets Against The War, which started after a poetry event at the White House with Laura Bush was cancelled after rumors of likely protests by the attending poets surfaced. I just started looking at the poems at random--submitted from all over, and I thought I'd share this one, by Julia Alvarez-- The White House Has Disinvited THE WHITE HOUSE HAS DISINVITED THE POETS The White House has disinvited the poets to a cultural tea in honor of poetry after the Secret Service got wind of a plot to fill Mrs. Bush's ears with antiwar verse. Were they afraid the poets might persuade a sensitive girl who always loved to read, a librarian who stocked the shelves with Poe and Dickinson? Or was she herself afraid to be swayed by the cooing doves, and live at odds with the screaming hawks in her family? The Latina maids are putting away the cups and the silver spoons, sad to be missing out on mzsica they seldom get to hear in the hallowed halls. . . The valet sighs as he rolls the carpets up and dusts the blinds. Damn but a little Langston would be good in this dreary mausoleum of a place! Why does the White House have to be so white? The chef from Baton Rouge is starved for verse uncensored by Homeland Security. NO POETRY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! Instead the rooms are vacuumed and set up for closed-door meetings planning an attack against the ones who always bear the brunt of silencing: the poor, the powerless, those who must serve, those bearing poems, not arms. So why be afraid of us, Mrs. Bush? You're married to a scarier fellow. We bring you tidings of great joy- not only peace but poetry on earth. I bid you all namaste, Sara - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Cc: Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 11:05 AM Subject: The Arch of the Moral Universe > John Gorka has a song he is playing in concert, not yet recorded (for > purchase), called War Makes War. I had heard of this postponed event on NPR several weeks ago. It struck me as so very odd. Like the author of the poem you posted, I too wondered about how things were in the Whitehouse before and after the announcement. I wondered not about the news story but the people in who made the decision or disagreed with it or just had to live with it. Of course, I'm not a poet...but I'm happy that other people also wonder about these seemingly mundane things that may harbinger matters of greater import. Oh, Abraham...
