I saw John a few months after 9/11 and he did an unnamed song about it...that may now be War Makes War. I have been listening to Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer a lot.. he died recently of a heart attack and I feel such a sense of loss....incredible songwriter and entertainer. They only have 3 CDs out, were scheduled to start the next in Dec. >What song do you like although you normally don't listen to that type of >music? dont know the name of it >What album, CD, disc, whatever-we-call-them-now do you plan to acquire >next? the new Allison Krauss >What are you reading this summer? boring medicare/HIPPA information-work related-leaves time for little else good thread!! We were on pace to set a new record for longest time between posts!! I guess we'll have to just start over. Now please everyone, no posts for at least 6 weeks!! ; ] Current favorite JG song? Hmmm, I've been listening to If I Could Forget To Breathe lately because I've been attempting to teach myself how to play guitar like my favorite folk singer. I got his guitar book and have tried playing along a few hundred times, but I have a feeling it will take a few thousand to be able to play like that. I have a much greater appreciation of how he seems to perform so effortlessly in concert knowing how difficult it is to play, let alone sing, that well. Song I like but don't normally listen to that type of song? When I say 'I listen to all kinds of music' I really mean it. I guess I don't listen to rap music but I did hear a song not too long ago that I like, by Will Smith called I think Summertime(?). It's a few years old, but it has a nice groove and the lyrics are actually pretty good. CD I plan to aquire next? I just got the new Bruce Springsteen one, The Rising. Great stuff, no one quite like him in my opinion. I know there's been alot of hype around the CD, but if you like power and passion in your music, it's great. What are you reading? I'm a little embarrassed to say I just finished The Hobbit. I had never read any of the Tolkien books when I was young and when the Lord Of The Rings came out I decided to sit down and read the trilogy. I now understand how the books gathered such a following. There is something empowering about books that have heroic quests, the little guy winning out over the powerful evil guy. OK, that's it. Now shhhhhhhhhhhh! No more posts (remember 6 weeks is the record). "Silence", I guess. It's always been a favorite. I actually haven't listened to much Gorka lately. I have heard him do the Pilot Light song a few times live. Song I like that's not usually what I listen to? Ummm...one of those Ricky Martin songs maybe. Or that might actually be something I like to look at, not listen to. :-) Next CD purchase? Ellis Paul's new one, "Speed of Trees", due out September 10. I think it's so odd when I buy a new CD and I already know all of the songs on it, like this one, but that's what happens when you follow someone around like I do. ;-) Currently reading? "We Dance Because We Can", a book with some fabulous photos and stories from Native American Pow Wow dancers. That's it from me for now! :-) SMOKEY Hertz & Alderdice www.HertzandAlderdice.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 20:47:25 EDT From: Pfleary@aol.com Subject: summer musings Current favorite JG song? Flying Red Horse. I have been in love with this song ever since I heard it live last year. Also I really like That's Why from the same CD and will be putting it on a mix of songs about Elvis that I am making. Song I like but don't normally listen to that type of song? I realize that it's pure pabulum and a prime example of insipid bubble gum pop but I just love Pink's I'm Coming Up. CD I plan to acquire next? Red House Records has just shipped me Going Driftless, an all female artist tribute to Greg Brown. I am also planning on getting Peter Mulvey's newest CD soon. What are you reading? Re-reading one of my all time favorite novels Green Grass Running Water by Thomas King. Will be reading Lovely Bones as soon as my wife finishes it. Peter ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 21:38:43 -0500 From: "Roberta Piper" Subject: Summer Musings Here are my Summer Musings as promised -- probably more than you bargained for: Current favorite JG song: "Oh Abraham". And, yes, I know the corporate world has bought off people in both parties. Song I like but don't normally listen to that type of song: "Big Boned Gal" on k.d. lang's country album "Absolute Torch and Twang". I can't stand country music but I absolutely *love* "Big Boned Gal"; it gets me dancing every time I hear it. (My feet dance even in the car.) CD I plan to acquire next: Kristina Olsen's "All Over Down Under". Recently acquired CD: David Baerwald's "Here Comes the New Folk Underground". A thoughtful album of very, very good songs . My very favorite, however, is DB's take on a traditional song: "Hellbound Train". What are you reading? I just finished "National Geographic Traveler: Barcelona" in preparation for a trip to Barcelona in October. I've been trying to learn as much Spanish as this old brain can manage so I've also been reading books and computer programs that teach Spanish. I've requested that the public library reserve a copy of "The Nanny Diaries" by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus for me to read when it becomes available. Borders is the place I first heard the music of John Gorka, just browsing the folk section, listening to a variety of musicians, and I was hooked! Someone once mentioned Lucy Kaplansky on here and I now love listening to her. I recently picked up a CD by Norah Jones, "Come Away With Me". I can't put my finger on it, but it reminds me of a smokey jazz type club in a Humphrey Bogart movie. I've also been listening to David Gray.."If you want, it come and get it"...which has gotten a lot of air time. It motivated me to pick up some of his other CD's. And of course in the rotation...John's "The Company you Keep", "Guess I better get back up Get up off the ground Again"..words from..What Was That. I can go on and on, I love listening to music... and reading:-) I've just picked up Bill Bryson's "In a Sunburned Country" and a book classified as fantasy Daughter of The Forest, Juliet Marillier. Although you didn't ask about movies...I must say that "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is a VERY enjoyable, laugh out loud movie. So if you take opportunities to bring more laughter in your life, take a walk or drive down to your local theatre and enjoy yourself! Thanks for sharing!
