I was formerly on the list when I lived in MA and mostly just lurked in the shadows. I've recently moved down here to Deltona, FL (between Daytona Beach and Orlando) and decided to drop a line to say hello. Since I re-subscribed to the list, I've gotten no postings. Is it because it s slow or am I not doing something right? Except if I am , I'll never know because I wouldn't get replies anyway. Oh well, I'll take that chance. I'm sitting here in my new house listening to a song of John's that I've been listening to a lot lately. It is Blue Chalk off the B5&7 album. Not only are the lyrics top notch, but I think the guitar work is phenomenal. I ve seen John a few times recently and he's played the song often. I got a disc from Jos on which he's interviewed for Folkscene and he described the song being covered by Maura O'Connell. I like her anyway so I bought the disc. Are any of you familiar with her? The album is Stories and it's all cover songs. While I like her cover, it does not come close to John's. I've been getting adjusted here and have had time on my hand as I don't start my job for another week. I've been listening to a lot of singers and bands I find comfort in because of their lyrics. One song in particular is Throw Your Arms Around Me" by the now defunct Australian band Hunters and Collectors. Is anyone familiar with the song? Great tune. H&C is a cousin of one of my favourite bands: Crowded House. The Finn brothers are perhaps some of the finest lyricists of their generation. Their songs run the gamut from tongue in cheek to painfully in love. Most people dismiss them because of being inundated with "Don't Dream It's Over" in the 80's by MTV. There's so much more there. I've also been listening to the Knife album by Aztec Camera which is really just a man named Roddy Frame. to give you an idea of his talent, Elvis Costello once described this album as the greatest collection of lyrics he's ever heard. Frame has made subsequent albums, but as with a lot of artists, he never did better than this first album which he incredible wrote and recorded at the tender age of 19. Well, I've rambled enough. I guess I got off topic, and for that I apologize My hope is that maybe I can spur a discussion on artists you all like for their lyrics and could maybe recommend an album of. I'm starving for good music here. Gawd, I miss the Boston music scene. Take care all. Thanks for putting up with me. It's good to be back. Michael ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 13:29:48 +0000 From: "Sara Chamberlin" Subject: Re: Summer musings Michael, You are not missing posts--there just haven't been any! But your post made me decide to import some get-things-started questions from another list I'm on: Here goes: What's your current favorite JG song, recorded or unrecorded? What song do you like although you normally don't listen to that type of music? What album, CD, disc, whatever-we-call-them-now do you plan to acquire next? What are you reading this summer? So, I'll start it off: "War Makes War"--heard John do it live in April, and have heard it online since--can't get it out of my head. Also, (cheating) "People Get Ready"--a roof-raising song of faith--wherever that faith may lie. "Soak Up the Sun"--Sheryl Crow--I haven't listened to her in a while, but this song has been all over the radio at work, so I'm considering woman-rock/pop again. Well, the new James Taylor is already on its way to me, so I guess I'm looking forward to the (rumored) release of a new one from Jackson Browne on September 24. Two good ones: Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold--forget the annointing hype--it's good! Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamtress, a small book by a Chinese author now living in France. He spent seven years being "re-educated" in rural China, which probably explains why this book is about two young men in the same situation--freed, changed and enlightened by their discovery of a suitcase full of outlawed French novels translated into Chinese. Witty, grim and heartbreaking. Okay, I've said my piece--thanks for reviving us, Michael! Here are my answers: What's your current favorite JG song, recorded or unrecorded: Still to this day it's John's cover of "Lock Keeper" by Stan Rogers. It get s me every time. Awesome. I've always wanted to hear John sing a song I'm told he wrote called "The Pilot Light Has Gone Out In Our Oven Of Love" Has anyone ever heard him do it? Is there even a recording that exists of it? Or am I being duped? What song do you like although you normally don't listen to that type of music? Since moving to FL I've been hearing more country music. I like Goodbye Earl by the Dixie Chicks. A strong message to the song. Nice. What album, CD, disc, whatever-we-call-them-now do you plan to acquire next? Lost In Space by Aimee Mann What are you reading this summer? How to be Good by Nick Hornby (the author of About a Boy and High Fidelity): A wife deals with how to be good after her husband has a sudden and extreme spiritual conversion. Man and Boy by Tony Parsons. An Englishman has a marital infidelity, upon which his wife leaves and he learns how to deal with his guilt while raising his four year old son alone.
