I meant my problems with receiving the bootleg, not Jos. The local mail lost my copy for a few weeks. Jos work is wonderful and I'm glad it's now "part of my own" I got to see John this Saturday in the Unitarian church I was married in. I've seen him a few times but never was he in the spirits he was in on Saturday. He was obviously struggling with a cold but was great. The whole idea has always made me very uncomfortable, but we seem to have this thread about once every six months, and it seems that the majority of folks feel that because the artist & managment participate it's okay. It seems to be very indivdual from artist to artist. Some artists are very much against bootlegs and feel projects like this send the wrong message by implying that some bootlegs are fine and some aren't. smg >From: "folkyboy" >Reply-To: good-noise@smoe.org >To: >Subject: Re: a new bootleg !! >Date: Sun, 12 May 2002 18:20:18 -0500 > >am i the only one objecting to the sale of bootlegs?! thats so wrong to >make >money off of someone else's work. thats why musicians hate to allow us >honest bootlegers to do so! ~tim > >----- Original Message ----- >From: "anne en jos" >To: >Sent: Sunday, May 12, 2002 5:27 PM >Subject: a new bootleg !! > > > > Hi Gorka friends, > > I made a new bootleg (it's the 5th John Gorka bootleg) > > > > John Gorka Recorded For FolkScene At The Long House, Encino, CA on >March > > 14, 2002. .Engineer Peter Cutler. That's strange, because I buy blank cdr's for less than 25 cents each and can mail them for less than a buck! I've been trading live music since the late 70's and have NEVER charged anyone ANYTHING (except the ACTUAL COST of blanks and postage) for making them a copy of a show. I have probably over a thousand shows, on cassette, vhs, and cdr, from audience recordings, soundboard dubs, fm, tv, and streaming audio downloads. I also have many that came with custom labels. I NEVER trade or trade for anything that is available commercially. Selling these discs, 1, 10, or 10,000, for $22 a shot is despicable in my opinion! (Hmm...lets see... *so far* 5 BOOTLEGS, times 10 copies each, times $22....gee that's $1,100, on a $15 investment.....not bad for someone 'not making profit'). There are hundreds of sites and probably thousands of traders on the internet who would be more than willing to SHARE copies of their music collection, either by an even swap (show for show) or simply for sending blanks and postage. This is a practice that I do not like to refer to as bootlegging. Please boycott BOOTLEGGERS who copy someone else's music for their own profit! This endangers the PRIVILEGE of live music tapers to continue taping shows and spreading the wonderful music to others who might not have been fortunate enough to be at some of these shows. Which also turns on some new listeners to performers they may not be able to hear too easily otherwise, thus creating a new audience. And for those of you who have read this far and can agree with my statements, I will offer a copy of JG at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA March 1, 2001. It's an audience recording, made by someone I met while I was there recording the show myself. I would love to trade for something similar, but would also be willing to make copies for anyone who does not have anything to offer for trade and can send me a blank cdr along with return postage. Email me and I'll give you more details. >Subject: Re: a new bootleg !! > >John and his manager always get a copy of Jos's productions--and I imagine >that the cost he charges for the only ten copies covers only the reproduction >and shipping costs--they are beautifully and lovingly produced, and Jos is not >making "money off of someone else's work". > >Sara > > >- ----- Original Message ----- >From: folkyboy >Sent: Sunday, May 12, 2002 6:24 PM >To: good-noise@smoe.org >Subject: Re: a new bootleg !! > >am i the only one objecting to the sale of bootlegs?! thats so wrong to make >money off of someone else's work. thats why musicians hate to allow us >honest bootlegers to do so! ~tim > >- ----- Original Message ----- >From: "anne en jos" >To: >Sent: Sunday, May 12, 2002 5:27 PM >Subject: a new bootleg !! > > >> Hi Gorka friends, >> I made a new bootleg (it's the 5th John Gorka bootleg) >> >> John Gorka Recorded For FolkScene At The Long House, Encino, CA on March >> 14, 2002. .Engineer Peter Cutler.
