What a great show! Alice Peacock opened and accompanied John on a number of his songs. It was the first Gorka show I had been to since Falcon Ridge last summer, and even though he wasn't shimmying to Love Shack with The Nields et. al., it was still a fantastic performance. John was in fine form sporting black jeans, a colored tee and a suit coat. Set list was as follows (plus a few ancedotes/samples of banter) Shape of the World--Not sheep! I'm From New Jersey--Introduction song for people who dragged friends or people on a date. Stranger With Your Hair--Makes me cry cry cry. Blue Chalk Let Them In--Told a story about how he recently found out who the original writer of the poem was. People My Age--Explained what scrapple was for the uninitiated. INTERMISSION Where the Bottles Break--Inspired me to make a mix of songs about gentrification. Love is Our Cross to Bear--another crier Prom Night In Pig Town--another scrapple song to balance with the first set. Told how he did not go to his prom and wrote this song after he attended his tenth reunion. Funny, I always thought this song was about my high school. :-) War Makes War--this is a brand new song he wrote this past Thursday. Great one. Oh Abraham--4/14 is the date that Lincoln was assassinated. He didn't mention it. House in the Fields--another song for my gentrification mix! Lightning's Blues Semper FI Morningside What Was That? Good Noise--took me back to Falcon Ridge ENCORE: People Get Ready-----WOW! What a treat! Water is Wide----I saw Greg Brown and Garnet Rogers close with this in Berkeley last Saturday night. Joan Baez, who was in the audience, joined in singing harmony. No Joan tonight, but Alice Peacock did a more than respectable job with the harmonies. I'm particularly envious of your concert experience with Garnet Rogers, Greg Brown and Joan Baez! What a special treat that must have been. Thanks for the tantalizing tid-bit! War Makes War is John's response to the current state of world affairs. He said he wrote it to counteract people who think peace can be achieved through war. People Get Ready is the classic Curtis Mayfield gospel song covered by so many folks. You know, People get ready There's a train a'coming You don't need no baggage You just thank the Lord (etc.) John's version is as good as most I've heard and better than quite a few. It was mentioned in an earlier e-mail about John playing People Get Ready at a concert, and if you weren't fortunate enough to have been there, you can hear a version of it on the Folkscene show. I'm glad that KPIG streamed it at a higher rate because it sounded great and I feel better about paying the higher price for a cable modem! On a side note, I saw Richard Shindell for the first this past weekend in Madison, WI. He comes in a close second to John on my favorite folk list. It was an incredible show, I was very impressed by just how good he really is. It's two days later and I'm still thinking about it (reminds me of a line from Gorka, 'when he left, the music stayed'). I believe in a separation of church and folk music. It is a catchy song, but John doesn't seem like the type to just do a song because of the tune. Anyway, if you like that song, the late Eva Cassidy did a good version of it on an album. But, then again, any version of a song that she did was stunning.
