My wife and I drove 3 hours from Cleveland and saw the second show. I had been wanting to go to The Ark for ages, and such an awesome line-up was too much to let pass. Thanks to Lucy Kaplansky's email newsletter for clueing me in. There was definitely a lot of good chemistry going on up there. The four of them were so funny. They must have been pretty punchy, though, because they took the "Dominatrix of Harmony" thing a little farther than it sounds like they did in the first show. Cheryl was absolutely hilarious. You'd think she was nodding off, when she wasn't singing. Then when she stood up to do her songs, she had us nearly doubled over with laughter. She's another dichotomy. At one point, she called Lucy a "slut", which the audience didn't hear, but Lucy made a point of telling us. And, Cheryl fessed right up, "that's right, I called her a slut." Then she got up and sang her new song. She told she wrote it before 9/11, and she probably couldn't have written it after (because it's called "I Love Afghanistan"). The songs were basically the same, except that John played "Semper Fi", which had Lucy and Cliff in tears. Lucy remarked on the dichotomy of John's shtick and the fact that he could write such beautiful songs. After their "You Really Got a Hold On Me" encore, we also cajoled them into a second encore, and they did "When She Kisses Me." - - Jack - ----- Original Message ----- From: Subject: On A winter's Night / Cover Tunes > Hello, all, > > Saw the 'On a Winter's Night' tour last night at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI, > with John, Lucy, Cliff Eberhardt and Cheryl Wheeler. > > Wow. ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V5 #11 *******************************
