The JG house concert at Bryn's house Sunday was terrific. John appeared to be quite relaxed for virtually all of the concert. He was obviously amused when Keb Mo (Bryn's golden-haired dog) wandered back and forth between John and the audience and barked when late-comers knocked on the door. I sent a strong mental message to John to sing Lightning's Blues. He must have received that message since he sang it as the second song of the second set. He also sang two other songs that are my favs: People My Age and I Saw a Stranger with Your Hair. He did not sing another of my favs, Raven in the Night, but Bryn gave each household a lovely printed copy of the lyrics which I intend to frame. The two opening acts were excellent. Ian proved once again that he has mastered Billy Jonas's song Tongo. And Michelle Bloom charmed us with her sweet voice, well-written lyrics and fine guitar-playing. Bryn is without a doubt "The Hostess with the Mostest". She made everyone, performers and those in the audience, feel welcome and comfortable. Plus I was able to visit with old friends and make new ones. A fantastic experience I will happily relive in my mind in the years to come. Chris and his wife, Angelle', had just driven in from Canada for the Gorka weekend and they were most happy to have found their way to "Aunt B's Bed and Breakfast". (Can you imagine driving twelve hours each way just to see John Gorka? Why, I cut my trip down to about eleven hours on the way back home last night . . . ) "No, I must NOT be Ranga!" I laughed while inviting them in and shaking their hands. They were justifiably baffled, and we can discuss all that at greater length at some later date. You see, Chris is one of those "Harley guys" who is in charge of installing communications equipment way up north, and his wife, Angelle', is a French teacher who soon gave up on trying to explain how to pronounce her name and started calling herself "Angel" instead. However, most of us still prefer to call her Angelle', even if we do so incorrectly . . . Regardless, those two joined our group gathering so effortlessly that it was as though we had all known each other for years. Almost immediately, they began to receive gifts from us and they continued to be amazed at the reception afforded to a couple of perfect stangers with "strange" accents. (As you must know by now, we "true southerners" are the only ones who know how to talk correctly.) It wasn't long before they realized that they were merely receiving back that which they so readily offered to us - unbridled friendship! Not only is Chris an avid motorcyclist, but his first trip to Sturgis, South Dakota several years ago was very similar to mine of last summer - an unexpected yet uneventful encounter with the Hell's Angels! The John Gorka lyric quotation which Chris chose for his name tag came from "Campaign Trail", as did mine, and the guy was even wearing the same brand of socks as me! Talk about karma . . . At this particular "On the Map" concert, I made sure to take a seat at the front of the room, but off to one side in order to be able to see the various musicians while monitoring the reactions of the audience - what an added treat! Just like the rest of us, Chris and Angelle' were mesmerized by John Gorka, but from my vantage point I received approximately 40 extra "shows" - and especially theirs - for the price of one. So, again; welcome, Chris and Angelle' - keep the rubber side down, ride to live, live to ride, you know the drill . . .
