Thanks to Bryn (On The Map House Concerts) for steering me to this list. John Gorka provided my introduction to contemporary folk music back in 1991, and I've never looked back. I saw him in a small bar in Cleveland with The Story (Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball) as his opener. I was invited by a friend, and I had no idea what to expect. Man, was I floored. To add fuel to the fire, my local paper ran a story about the growing phenomenon of house concerts and how guys like Gorka were doing them to fill their schedules and build an audience in a new area. John Gorka in my living room?! Sadly at that time, my house was barely bigger than a postage stamp, but I never gave up hope of someday hosting my own concerts. Now, ten years later, I have a room big enough to hold 50 people -- 60, if I push it. I have hosted Darryl Purpose and Cosy Sheridan -- two nicer people you couldn't meet. I have also made connections with the great folks at Fleming & Tamulevich, so I haven't given up hope of someday seeing John at the front of my living room!~) My house concert series is called Acoustic Avenues, and a (fledgling) website can be found at http://AcousticAvenues.org. I look forward to contributing my own Good Noise to this list. - - Jack Gould Avon Lake, Ohio ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 14:31:47 EDT From: SMOKEY596@aol.com Subject: Re: Introducing myself to the list... Where is Avon Lake located in Ohio? > Avon Lake is in Northeast Ohio, about 20 miles west of Cleveland, and right along Lake Erie. It's got a nice small town feel, but it's becoming just another suburb of Cleveland. Gotta love urban sprawl. - - Jack ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V4 #168 ********************************
