I must be with the right man...he still loves his rock n roll but was very impressed with John. He had heard quite of bit of him on CD. Jos asked recently if John is talking about the WTC. He did not say the words World Trade Center or bombing, but did refer several times to the horrible horrific things that have happened. He seemed more distracted or scattered than other times I have seen him. This was in the sanctuary of a lovely church, the sound was incredible. He opened with When She Kisses Me then explained he did so for all the new people because he wanted them to think he did upbeat happy music....this got a very big laugh. Probably around 200 people there and I think the newbies were the minority. next: I'm From New Jersey Flying Red Horse (by oral request tho he wasnt sure whether it was mental or if we all heard it) Good Wisheries (my mental request-he didnt do Oh Abraham which I should have verbalized) I Know Down in the Milltown (on piano) Mercy of the Wheel Where the Bottles Break A Saint's Complaint People My Age (the crowd loved it) Then he said this next one was the 1st thing that came out of the horrible stuff that had happened, that there was so much talk of hurry up and heal which he thought was premature...he said the title may be "Only Love Can Mend A Heart" beautiful song. Next was one he said was from yesterday or the day before...never said a title but I would think perhaps "The Old Future's Gone" could be the eventual title. The events obviously are very much on his mind and troubling him. Then: Stranger With Your Hair Let Them In (on piano) Good Noise (he said we need as much good noise as we can make right now) One Encore, One song Gypsy Life I did pass him in an upstairs hall before the concert and he said hi...did not see him after the concert. He mentioned that he would be in St Louis tonight and I know someone on the list is going. You will have a wonderful time. My boyfriend and I were very moved by the 2 new songs that he sang and am sure he will write more. Thank you for sharing it with us. I especially got a kick out of your recounting how John was unsure if the request for Flying Red Horse was verbal or mental. Gave me a little secret smile. Years ago, at a concert he encouraged mental requests from the audience. In my enthusiasm, I shouted out, "Flying Red Horse". He rebukked my request, pointing out the difference between a mental and verbal request. I was so mortified. I'm glad that he accepts both kinds of requests now. I would have loved to be there to here him do Mercy of Wheels live. That's another very, very favorite and I've not heard it live. Lucky you! Getting very excited about my upcoming JG concert next month. Is anyone from the list planning on attending the Nov. 16th concert at the Octagon in Clearwater, Florida? I have my tickets! I'll be there with my 20 year old son and one of my best girl friends. I'd love to meet any list members that might be in attendance there. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 01:21:29 -0500 (CDT) From: Adam Bailey Subject: Sunday 10/14 evening Gorka concert How can I even begin to describe this concert? I have never seen John in person before tonight. I had no idea, aside from others' stories, what his stage presence and personality were like. He was truly funny and awe inspiring at the same time. From the way he shook his guitar to get the last notes out, to the funny looks on his face during some of the songs, to what looked like tears in his eyes during let them in and semper fi, this man was absolutely amazing. Before I continue further, here is the set list: Like my watch I'm from NJ Stranger with your hair Blue chalk Cypress trees A saint's complaint People my age (30 minute break) Silence Land of the bottom line Baby blues Houses in the fields (on the piano) Let them in (on piano) Girl of north country (found on A Nod to BOB) Lightning blues Semper fi Mercy of the wheels Only love can mend a broken heart (brand new- relating to WTC attacks) The old future's gone (also new and relating to 9/11) Love is our cross to bear Good noise Encore 1: The water is wide (on piano) Encore 2: Morningside I was impressed how many older songs he did, not to mention the amount of songs in general. Correct me if I'm wrong, but does he usually do 22 songs? He made the audience happy by doing many requests. The only songs I was hoping to hear that he didn't play were 'Where the bottles break' and the body parts medley (and maybe the ice goes out also). He did the thing where he asked us old or new, fast or slow, and happy or sad. We picked slow, sad, and old. He said do not despair, as many of you know I've got lots of old, sad, and slow songs. Someone asked for Zuly (from after yesterday) and he sort of looked at the guy like it was really out of left field, which I guess it was. I'll probably add to this tomorrow when I've digested more, but sufficed to say it was FANTASTIC. One more thing- to whoever said that the opening singer, Sam Schaber was very good, I must agree she was wonderful. She has a bright future in singer songwriter kind of folk music. She was worth the price of admission just for her 6 or seven songs. This whole evening was truly something to remember.
