"Indie" started out as a reference to independent record labels,
which are relatively small businesses, frequently owned and
operated by the artists themselves (as opposed to the "major"
labels, like Sony, Warner Bros., et. al.).  Ironically, it used to
be that the "major" label record deal was every artist's goal,
and being forced to put out albums on anything less was an
embarrassment -- but over time, "indie" artists have begun to
wear the label with pride, because it suggests that their music
is somehow unique enough that the mainstream folks won't
touch it.  So now, as you've observed, the term "indie" has
come to describe its own type of music -- sort of like what's
happened with the word "alternative."
