Great guitar chops (pretty talented on a variety of instruments, actually), pleasantly powerful voice, and some killer songs, often with unexpected twists. He's also a heck of a nice guy. Go see him. > Also, are people here familiar with Darryl Purpose? He's another good one. His voice turned me off at first, but once you get used to it, you realize that he's also got some great songs. His song "Mr. Schwinn" is a masterpiece, and if you see him perform, be sure to request "Singer Songwriter Heaven" (he didn't write it, but it's excellent). Smokey, or anyone, can you tell what he is like? Also, are people here familiar with Darryl Purpose?<<< Aaaaaaaa! Now you ARE teasing me, aren't you?? YES yes yes....go see Don! He's an amazing guitarist, songwriter, and more than that he's an amazing human being. You will NOT be disappointed! He did a house concert for me last month that was so amazing (I went to one he did at Bryn's house last December too!). You can see pictures from my show and his show in Louisville at http://hometown.aol.com/smokey596/doncon.html Not that seeing the pictures are going to help you make up your mind or anything, but they're fun. :-) And Darryl Purpose? Well, I confess that I haven't heard him, ALTHOUGH all of Don and Ellis' fans speak extremely high of him, so I'd say that's a good bet too. I hope you do go see Don, and be sure to report back on what you thought! :-) SMOKEY "You've heard Al Gore say he invented the internet. He is a bear of a man who was once a very well respected professional gambler. Since 1996, however, he has been a full-time singer/songwriter. He has a knack for telling stories with his songs, often stories of dark characters. My favorite song, however, is the bittersweet "Mr. Schwinn", who owned a bicycle shop and saved back a bicycle for the woman he hoped to marry some day. In concert, Darryl is often quite funny. If I get another chance to attend a DP concert, I will. I lived there for about 15 years and don't recall ANY folk scene there at all to speak of, but I was just there in March and saw John at a funky little club called Java Joe's in Ocean Beach. John was great but I found the audience a bit lukewarm. They have a web site you can check out and they are easy to find. They have live music almost every night I think. Lucy Kaplansky was also there this spring and some other recognizable names. Tiny little intimate joint, more like a private party. Susan p.s.. ALL I am listening to right now (OK, besides John) is Chris Cunningham whom I met through Bryn. He performed at my first house concert last night to a backyard audience of 55 people and he was fantastic. I was mezmerized and so was the audience. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 22:28:15 EDT From: ThePsyche@aol.com Subject: doncon....gorka phone......what's in my CD player Gina, Go. IT is one of those things you will not regret. When Don contacted me last summer about coming and doing a house concert, I had heard his name for a while, especially on the David Wilcox list and knew he was something special. So I said yes to the house concert never having heard a CD or anything. Don is an amazing musician and writer, but as Smokey said, he is a very special human being as well. He stayed with us and charmed us all. If you ask my eight year old which house concert is his favorite, he always says donconmom. (it is one word, a new word we created here at our house) He says doncon was his favorite not for reasons you all might think.....not the music, but because the next day when "mom" was hollering about getting his bed made, he and don snuck in there and don made his bed for him...that is what Ian remembers. It put Don Conocenti right down there in that little room a Mother saves in her heart for people who do something heartfelt and kind for their child. Go see him Gina. Tell him Bryn and Ranga and Ian say hello and look for the little trinket I gave don that he now keeps on his special CD table display.....or at least that is what I have been told....it is there, somewhere if you look. Let us all know about it. Gorka content for this post: Last week, I came home late one evening to find a very long answering machine message. Someone had called me from a Gorka show in North Carolina (I know that much from my caller ID) and I got to do the dishes while I listened to that answering machine message. Thanks whoever you were....it was that little fix I needed during this long Gorka dry spell. Thanks all you good-noisers :-) I will most definitely go to see Don Con. I am also going to a house concert with Darryl Purpose at the end of the month and will report on both. And, lucky me, I also get to see Cliff Eberhardt next week at a house concert too! But, John Gorka still remains one of my most favorite concerts to go to. I was in the car the other day and flipped in a Gorka CD. "Part of Your Own" came on and once again I got all teary eyed. I brought it to my friend and wanted her to hear it. She didn't have a working CD player, so I let her read the lyrics. She didn't even make it half way through before she was getting misty eyed too. Can you imagine having a son write something like that for you? It's just so touching. So, who else has good mother songs? Lucy has a great one. It's called "For Once in Your Life" and the first time I heard it was in concert and her mother was there. I nearly started sobbing out loud! But, it is a different sort of mother song than John's and hit a serious chord in me - very personal. Loudon Wainwright III has some good mother songs. So, good-noisers, who else has good mother songs? I suppose that father songs might be appropriate too, considering that the day is coming up.
