They are great as is Susan Werner and all of the others listed. I am looking forward to 3 days of good music and great folks. Last year there was a crafts fair, lots of interesting food, activities for kids to keep them busy. Hope some of you can join us! I'm always a little jealous as the folk season gets underway down south. But it's so hard to leave alaska in the summer. I'll be there in spirit. Thanks for the posts/links Susan and Otto et al. I can live it somewhat vicariously. I rather like the idea of a reunion, Sam. Especially in Alaska. Say, around Oct. 27th? Got one confirmation already. I bet Mary would come. It was Mary who used to live here, and is now in Reno? The chant. I've listened to it over and over. It is strange piece of orchestration for John, in a way. At least I think so. But I think, like Sam, it's not an actual chant. To me it sounds like certain words in each phrase sung elongated. Kind of an echo. And I'm not sure, but there may be a bowed bass in there at times. Or perhaps just John's voice. Very mysterious. Will ask him this October, unless someone else does it first and posts the answer. Shelley, you are quite welcome, but I think I get the greater deal. Thank *you* for the poem. What a gift! I made a pretty printed copy of it to set on my alter. I look forward to talking more to you about poetry and music and polotics.......... which is of course, running around with a big stick trying to beat a ball or a bill and occasionally your opponent. And maybe pickin some together. That would be fun. Have a wonderful day everyone. ~Martin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 12:00:38 -0500 From: "jvotel" Subject: Gorka story Hi folks: I sent my Gorka interview from The Washington Times to the good-noise list twice and it hasn't appeared on the digest. I wonder if there is a problem with it? It did not get kicked back to me as undeliverable, either. Did anyone see it? - -- Jay Votel (jvotel@megapipe.net) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 13:18:13 EDT From: Togg4@gateway.net Subject: Re: Gorka story In a message dated 4/11/01 11:05:57 AM Central Daylight Time, jvotel@megapipe.net writes: > Did anyone see it? > It wasn't seen on this PC *pouts* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 17:25:43 -0500 From: "jvotel" Subject: Return of Cutting Room Floor Hi good-noisers: Here are some more quotes from that March 13 interview with John Gorka that could not be included in the April 7 article in The Washington Times. Consider them footnotes to the article, included here for serious Gorka fans. What Was That: "The person in that song was recently knocked down and they realize they're still alive. The line 'move along when the crowd is right, stand alone when the crowd is wrong' (has personal meaning). For a long time, I remember having an outsider-type of attitude. When something was popular, I would discount it. I realized the crowd is right sometimes. The crowd isn't always wrong." A Saint's Complaint: "This was inspired by staying home and finding a sense of place. You get what you work for. Good things happen. Good things come to people who work for them, whether they (the people) are good or not." Ani Difranco (who performs on Oh Abraham): "I have known her for a long time. This was the first time we had done anything on record together. I love what she did." When You Walk In (with Mary Chapin Carpenter and John Jennings): "A friend was going through a divorce... it was one of the last songs I wrote (for the record). When I wrote that one, I felt like I had a record. I wanted to have John (Jennings, guitarist) on the record because I didn't want people to think anything had happened (to the friendship. Mr. Jennings produced the previous three Gorka recordings)." Shape of the World: "I like the opening line. I opened with that song Sunday (March 11) in Chicago. I'm going to see how it feels and maybe keep doing it. Openers are hard to come by." More to come. - -- Jay Votel (jvotel@megapipe.net) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 19:02:04 EDT From: Togg4@gateway.net Subject: Re: Return of Cutting Room Floor In a message dated 4/11/01 4:33:31 PM Central Daylight Time, jvotel@megapipe.net writes: > > Shape of the World: "I like the opening line. He stopped, moved the capo and said, "I really am an idiot." I'm just curious ... was this shtick? Did John do this in any other shows that anybody has seen?
