I was not allowed to talk politics with my mother or sister during the Clinton years because regardless of any good the man did, I believe he is as corrupt and hypocritical as they come. Please believe me when I say I don't want to get into a debate over him. My point is that Democrats can be just as judgmental and hostile if they think you don't believe as they do. I am an Independent voter and I respect anyone's right to vote for the person or party they choose. Friends should always be able to agree to disagree. I agree, Mary. As an avid Democrat since John Kennedy's assassination in November, 1963, I must be constantly wary of my own potential biases in regard to my perceptions of what is "right" and "wrong" in American politics and government. When I was completing my bachelor's degree in political science in the early seventies at Virginia Tech, it was recognized as having one of the top ten political science schools in the nation. There was a vast array of articulate, challenging, interesting professors there then, and I'm sure that's still true today. Back then, one of my professors developed a course of study around George Wallace's statement (in justifying his third-party candidacy) that "there's not a dime's worth of difference" between the national Democrats and Republicans. After ten weeks of analyzing data which our professor had collected - and collecting much more of our own - our class concluded that Mr. Wallace was not entirely correct, and that the difference between the two parties was more like a nickel's worth! However, with that being said, I know precisely why I am a Democrat, and I understand perfectly what the Republicans are saying. Having done a little traveling to foreign countries over the past few years, I can assure you that the most important aspect of this "conversation" is that we are able to have it in this country without fear of repression, reprisal or undue scrutiny. Regardless of our various political persuasions, we have somehow managed to work together effectively for more than two hundred years, and that says something about all of us . . . Regardless of political party affiliation, John Gorka would say to us, "I'm running for my life here, out on the campaign trail" and "I'd like to think I'm special, but I do know otherwise . . . " Thanks! Friends should always be >able to agree to >disagree. I too vote independently. That is the point I've been trying to make. I didn't support Gore because I'm a democrat. I voted democratic because Gore is a good man whom I have supported for years and have placed much hope and faith in, for many well-thought out reasons. But enough! This all gets very boring sometimes. I'm going outside to play with my four-year-old, who knows more about all of this than any of us. On that note I'll leave you all with a poem I'm fond of that pretty much sums up how I feel about the whole shebang. Hope you enjoy it. TO LIVE We have forgotten ourselves Too much freedom is not to blame. Her name is fertility. Without her love is lost. The law is not to blame. It is contrived by man and is made up of words and words are not to blame for they are chosen. Too much choice is not to blame for she is the sister of Freedom and inspires change which is the heartbeat of life. Change is not to blame for Constancy is her bedfellow. It's not murder or lust or greed for they are the children of lost love whose tantrums produce war so war is not to blame since it is an effect. Religion is not to blame for it tis the lost tribe of God and God is not to blame because he is All or Nothing. So choose one and live. Still the geese fly south. We haven't managed to confuse them yet though if you watch them closely they seem afraid. None but this rends my soul and chills my heart and I am afraid. So I watch them closely. Those, playful and businesslike, with their lifelong mates give me joy and I laugh. And those with none comfort me and give me strength and humility. I take courage in their flight to wherever they think south is for when we've managed to rob them of their instinct, we'll have no examples left to follow. They will be as lost as we have been since we have managed to rob ourselves of imagiantion. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Sansone" To: Sent: Sunday, April 08, 2001 8:31 AM Subject: Re: politics > People are people all over the world....
